It is required that one strengthens their abdominal muscles to help if they are punched or hit in the stomach area. Sit Ups are a core exercise that works both the abdominals and calls the hip flexors into play.
The best instructor is the best to take. A great Tai Chi instructor that you enjoy taking classes with is superior to a Krav Maga instructor that you get a very bad vibe from and whose “advanced” students don’t seem very advanced or adaptable.

While many fights end on the ground, almost all fights start standing up. Dirty boxing, aka “clinch boxing” or “trap boxing,” prepares you for strikes that work in stand-up grappling and moves that are illegal in the boxing ring.

Original Jiu Jitsu has its roots in Japan in the 1500’s, but in the early 20th Century, a Japenese master taught the art to a family of Brazilians (the Gracies), and they truly made it their own. Relying less on brute force attacks, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu uses leverage and an opponent’s strength to his or her disadvantage. In the early UFC competitions, you can see this in action—Royce Gracie defeating much larger opponents with takedowns and submissions. People are more aware of this fighting style now. You can’t know only this one practice and be successful in MMA, but it’s a very useful martial art if you ever find yourself in a street fight. The only downside is the emphasis on pure ground fighting. It’s helpful to also know throws and takedowns, but some gyms don’t teach those skills if they’re more focused on sport Jiu Jitsu.
The bottom line is this: Martial arts are not self-defense. Self-defense is not personal safety. Fighting is neither self-defense nor personal safety. While martial arts training can be used in a self-defense context, it is a far better idea to create a much stronger alloy of personal safety instead of any single “fighting” system. Martial arts are part of complete personal safety regime, they are not the sole answer.

Jujitsu is best when combined with Judo. When learning Jujitsu, you learn various choke holds, arm bars, leg bars, and other maneuvers you can use to manipulate your opponent. Unfortunately, if a jujitsu fighter can’t close the distance against someone like a Boxer, who learns how to distance properly, then that person may never get the chance to take the fight to the ground.
One must bear in mind, however, that most women who are raped are raped by someone they know, be it a friend, an ex-boyfriend or husband, or even an acquaintance from Math or History class, as opposed to being a stranger. If I had to choose between the two and the primary goal was self defense versus fitness, I’d suggest jiujitsu. KM revolves around the theory that you avoid the ground and if you end up on the ground your only goal is to get back up. It’s two key wins are that it also focuses on aggression — something women often don’t entertain as a matter of social conditioning — and it deals with weapons disarmament.
