The thing that makes Judo so good for self defence is its single-minded approach to throwing people on the floor. A throw on a thick Judo mat can take the wind out of your sails yet a throw onto concrete will cause serious injury.
These 2 types differ in terms of expansion and penetration. Having the right amount of expansion and penetration is essential, however it also depends on the type of activity you’re using the ammo for. For instance, it should have deeper penetration characteristics if you’re hunting, especially for larger games meanwhile for range training, the penetration don’t matter that much because after all, you’ll just be punching holes in paper targets.

Personally, I would also recommend medical training as that’s more likely to save a life than self defense classes. And I’d also suggest weapons training so you have a myriad of tools (and defense against those tools) at your disposal should you need them.

A good Self defense class needs ground defense if they don’t teach you how to fight from the ground with the attacker on top of you it is a waste of your time and money. Many times a woman wakes up to her attacker already on top of her or he takes he to the ground before she has a chance to do anything about it. Lets face it why are you being attacked in the first place to be raped. One or two simple striking classes are not enough to create muscle memory, you just will not react fast enough to prevent the attack you will go to the ground.

We maintain that the way to judge *effective* self-defense training for the “average person” is that a MAJORITY of the class needs to focus on issues other than the physical. The physical is only one small layer of skill sets.
Sparring sports like boxing or MMA are not self-defense, either. They are fighting sports, and can make you kick ass in a ring setting, but they are not self-defense. And for some, being good at fighting is likely to work against you in self-defense situations, because you are more likely to think you can fight your way out of it, when fleeing is the much better option.

No self defense fighting system is 100% guaranteed to make you fully prepared for self defense. There’s always going to be things that happen that are outside of your control and no amount of training will help you. Self defense requires much more than fighting. It involves diffusing potentially violent situations, avoiding and resolving conflict, being aware of your surroundings, knowing when to comply, knowing when to flee, etc. If you failed to recognize danger when you see it and learn to avoid it, you’ve already lost half the battle.
