2. Learned this from a tourist guide. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you….  Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
“I can honestly say that this is without a doubt the best way to bring functional, realistic and useful self-defense to the public. I have been involved in the martial arts and self-defense industry for close to 30 years and have not seen anything like the C.O.B.R.A.™ program.”
Bruce Lee envisioned “a style without style,” which seems nonsensical. But try to understand the concept of adaptation. Lee emphasized this above all: “the worst thing you can do is to anticipate the outcome of a fight. You ought not to be thinking of anything but his attack and your response. Clear all other thoughts from your head, or they will slow you down.”
This martial arts discipline focuses on teaching its practitioners to effectively defend themselves against a larger sized opponent using leverage and proper technique. Hence, it is as lethal when practiced by females as it is for males.
Second, there is commonly an underlying assumption of self-righteousness regarding so-called “self-defense.” In fact, some programs go so far to encourage fighting while still others encourage behavior that will commonly lead to violence. To begin with there is a drastic difference between self-defense and fighting and it is a difference that you need to know. Bottom line, it will not be immediately apparent to the responding officer that you are the “victim” who was obviously only defending him/herself against this horrible person. While police will often arrest both parties in a “fight” they are almost guaranteed to arrest the “winner.” If you have successfully “defended” yourself, then that means you. Furthermore, your claim of “self-defense” is going to be seriously undermined if you were an equal participant in the problem — no matter how self-righteous or justified you felt you were. As there are serious legal ramifications to this subject you had better make sure that you weren’t part of the problem.

We preserve the so-called peace of our community by deeds of petty violence every day. Look at the policeman’s billy and handcuffs! Look at the jail! Look at the gallows! Look at the chaplain of the regiment! We are hoping only to live safely on the outskirts of this provisional army. So we defend ourselves and our hen-roosts, and maintain slavery. . . . I think that for once the Sharps rifles and the revolvers were employed in a righteous cause [i.e., Brown’s insurrection].
Next we got with a partner and practiced hitting pads with our palm-heel. This was getting fun. As a student of FAST Defense, I have grown to appreciate my adrenaline as an important survival tool, and I love self-defense classes that give me an opportunity to channel it and make it work for me. Next we moved into some attack scenarios, first watching the instructor and his assistant walk through a frontal choking situation. He showed us how to get out of this and what not to do, then we broke it down into steps and practiced one step at a time with our partners. We started with a block, then added a palm strike, and finally added a knee to the groin. The order and speed in which we learned this was very easy to understand and really simplified the moves. Throughout the class, the instructor came around and offered feedback and criticism on our form and force.
Sounds great! you should try Denver Wing Chun off of South Broadway the women in that class can surely hold their own. They teach more of an Applied Wing Chun and not so much the meditative. I have watch my wife become confident in the skill she has learned.
Dr. Jerry Beasley was Black Belt’s 2000 Instructor of the Year. A professor at Radford University in Radford, Virginia, he is the author of Dojo Dynamics: Essential Marketing Principles for Martial Arts Schools.
“Two guys were playing pool,” he says. “I was watching them play. I was having a shitty week, apparently they were having a shitty day. Our eyes crossed at one point. One guy gets in my face and he says to me, ‘Do you have a fucking problem man?’ And I with complete honesty and earnestness I say, ‘Brother I got a lot of problems man, I don’t know why you ask. Does it show on my face? That’s why I’m here. I’m kinda drinking them away.'”
I have experience in muay thai and brazilian jiu jitsue as well as other arts. I look to commit to a martial art so that I dont simply keep skipping from one to another and actually get in depth into the art.

At this stage she needs to develop a love for martial arts and Capoeira is a good starting place. It will help with muscle development and reflexes but Jujitsu is a better choice for practical purposes and self defence. But as she is still very young Capoeira should be sufficient for now. All the best!
Don’t be fooled that a 5 week course will teach you more. They will crowd your mind with hard to execute techniques that in fact, could cause more danger for you. Most women, after they take a self defense course, walk away thinking they would be ready and prepared for a situation months after their course; not true. We at Female Awareness believe it is best to keep practicing, so we offer the Physical Refresher class every couple of weeks. My class is fun and engaging…after all, self defense should not be a scary thing, it should make you feel smarter and stronger. I guarantee you will leave my class immediately feeling empowered and more confident.
Thailand’s most celebrated “Art of Eight Limbs” is renowned for its substantial use of elbow and knee strikes. It is no surprise that such ferocious form of self-defense would emerge from a country who has faced much violence and conquest tracing back the history to Siamese Revolution in 1932.
Hi, I’m Tim Larkin, founder & creator of Target Focus Training, the world leader in personal-protection training. For more than 25 years I’ve taught everyone from US Navy SEALS to regular citizens how to survive unavoidable violent attack. During this time TFT has been talked about by prestigious journalists on ABC & CBS News, the UK’s BBC, publications such as the Financial Times of London, Forbes & the South China Post, endorsed by such notables as Tony Robbins & Glenn Beck, and seen on Good Morning America and the Katie Couric show.
The best way to train is to be task-specific. That means if you want to be good at self-defense, you need to train for self-defense, not martial arts (and again – learn martial arts for exercise, discipline, etc to your heart’s content, just know that you aren’t training for self-defense).
“He didn’t feel it. He’s ready to come at me again, and I go, ‘Whoa, wait a second!’ I give him a palm out and show him his ear and go, ‘Look at that, man.’ So he pauses, he’s staring at the ear in my hand. And literally he looks at my face, he takes inventory. He counts both my ears … and then he starts to freak out because now he realizes it’s his ear that’s in my hand. And then I tell him, ‘Here, take this, put this in ice, man. Maybe they can sew it back on.’ And he takes his ear and takes off into the night, just disappears, and I turned around and puked my fucking lungs out.”
The volume of fire concept improves your handgun shooting accuracy while delivering a constant string of fire until the threat is stopped, or if you are on the range, until a reactive target goes down. The concept of delivering shots in patterns is flawed because we don’t know how many shots it will take to
Beyond the despicable efforts to blame the victim and not the alleged gun-toting racist charged with the crimes, Cotton’s assertion reflects a common and romanticized argument by the gun lobby. If we were all armed, we would all be safe, an argument as devoid of humanity as it is of logic.
Besides that, the Federal company load these self-defense rounds into a factory fresh boxer-primed ammo case that has a nickel-plated brass construction. The all-metal construction preserves the shelf life of the bullet therefore contributing to its durability whereas the boxer-style primer assists in convenient reloading.
A person may use force to defend a third person from attack. If the defender is mistaken, however, and the third party does not need assistance, most jurisdictions hold that the defender may be held liable in civil court for injuries inflicted on the supposed attacker. In criminal cases a defendant would be relieved of liability if she proved she had made a reasonable mistake.
At level 2, intermediate self-defense course, students will continue to review and hone skills learned in KM level 1. This training will introduce additional punches and kicks, punch defenses with counterattacks, defenses against various chokes and kicks, bearhugs, and headlocks. Precision elements such as timing, distance, and alternative targeting are introduced. Students training an average of two to three times per week can expect to complete the level 2 curriculum in six months before testing for KM Level 3.

There is no doubt you can wind up on the ground in a real fight. When this happens you want to get off the ground as soon as possible, if not, you need to get to a position of dominance. Proper Judo stresses pinning as well as submissions. Wrestling will train you to gain control but it will also allow you to give up your back and BJJ, with excellent submissions and ground work that is second to none, will train you to wait – both giving up your back and waiting are not advisable in a fight.
Many people are familiar with the term “black belt” and associate it with having a very high ranking in the practice of martial arts. However, there is much more to the system of the martial arts belts, including the order of their rankings and what each color belt means.
If you don’t mind, I do have another question: I’m thinking of getting a KM DVD course, mainly for use myself (I may end up taking some adult classes at ikmftoronto as well). There seems to be only two on Amazon right now:
Warming up and stretching is important prior to a workout, but it’s impossible to get the best self defense training if you don’t stretch after each session. It can be challenging to make yourself take the time to stretch once your class is completed, especially if you’re attempting to fit Krav Maga training into an already-busy life. However, if you don’t make the time, you’ll be missing out on many of the benefits of training, and you might even be doing more harm than good.
My personal view is that Wing Chun is one of those arts that is excellent for self defence, however it is unlikely that you will ever get to see it in action, and as such a lot of people will disagree. Solid straight punching is the hallmark of great skill and this is what Wing Chun delivers.
“The most popularized story of Wing Chun’s origin is that of the Buddhist Nun, Ng Mui. It is said that she was one of Five Elders of the Shaolin Temple that managed to escape prior to its destruction. With her high level of Shaolin martial arts, she created a form of self-defense which could transcend size, weight and gender. She drew her inspiration for Wing Chun from the movement of animals, primarily the crane. When applied to the human form, these delicate but natural movements required little force to block and strike effectively and efficiently.
I will say you don’t need this for self defense, but having 3 black belts and ranks in several other arts I understand the need to study, grow, learn, and be a part of a great social structure that is the dojo.
