Distinguishing between defensive and insurrectionary violence can be complicated. In the Amistad case, for example, white officials initially described it as a rebellion and thus a violation of the law, but later reclassified it as self-defense when the original enslavement was found to be unlawful. In a rare reversal, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized the captives on the Amistad as having selves worthy of defense. Sport martial arts like Wrestling, Judo and Boxing can actually be excellent self defense. Many Martial Artists make cerebral arguments about non-sport martial arts being better for self defense because of sport martial arts’ emphasis on sport behavior. But sport martial arts also condition the practitioner better physically and emotionally for violent, unpredictable encounters. Sports like Wrestling and Boxing teach practitioners how to deal with pain, fear and fatigue as well as condition reflexes for applying technique in stressful situations. What matters here is not the discipline itself but the manner of training as sport martial arts emphasise repetitive sparring often with opponents of varying body types and levels of experience.
You throw your attacker by lowering your center of gravity under his, and jerking him over you, or around you. It’s simple and effective. If he attacks with a weapon, you trap this arm, then deliver a knife-hand strike to his collarbone, while shoving him backward and down, locking the weapon wrist and breaking it.

And while we absolutely don’t advise you use these on anyone who isn’t seriously attacking you, we’re hard-pressed to believe that anyone would fuck with you if you practiced these on those little shits at the elementary school.
Considered less popular than other Brazilian martial arts styles such as Capoeira and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, this full contact combat sport is as lethal seeing that its name literally means “anything goes”. A point we feel strongly about is that effective self-defense training focuses as much on your responsibility for your words/actions and the legal restrictions/repercussions of violence as it does your “right” to hit. Sit in on almost any martial arts/self-defense class and you will see the students, in unison, striking and kicking at the air as they shout (also in unison) “Kiai.” That’s preparation for when a class pairs off and practices kicks and strikes, as well as holds, throws, and weaponry on each other.
Physical self-defense is the use of physical force to counter an immediate threat of violence. Such force can be either armed or unarmed. In either case, the chances of success depend on a large number of parameters, related to the severity of the threat on one hand, but also on the mental and physical preparedness of the defender.
History: Originally developed in the late 1920s and ’30s by founder Morihei Ueshiba, this Japanese martial art is a synthesis and continuation of another ancient fighting system known as Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu. In conjunction, much of this discipline’s principles, philosophy, and practices are heavily influenced by Ueshiba’s love of the teachings of a neo-Shintoist religious leader (and diehard pacifist) by the name of Onisaburo Deguchi, who ran the Ōmoto-kyō religion out of Ayabe, Kyoto in the early 1900s. Aikido was introduced to the world at large in 1951, when its founder traveled to France to teach his techniques to Judo students. This martial art is still widely practiced the world-round, although it does not have the same following as many of the most striking-oriented fighting systems out there. Nonetheless, it is still formidable in the hands of a practiced student.
Principles: While other Japanese practices such as Judo and Aikido focus most heavily on redirection and throwing, Jiu-Jitsu (while still having some of the same basis), is much more closely related to wrestling. Yes, Jiu-Jitsu still incorporates throwing as a base fundamental, but it is more a means of getting your opponent into a position in which you can get them into one of the fighting style’s many forms of grappling. Primarily a one-on-one system, Jiu-Jitsu relies on choke holds, joint locks, and immobilization to stop an assailant, rather than striking techniques common throughout karate-related martial arts. But don’t let the lack of punches dissuade you, as this form of combat is widely considered by expert fighters around the world to be one of the best of all time.
Strikes to the face and head are important, but the attacker will expect them, so instead, block his right-handed attack with your left fist (or vice versa), and punch with your other hand straight into the soft spot below his sternum as hard as possible, twisting the hips. This target is the solar plexus, and will incapacitate him as effectively as a strike to the groin.

Don’t be fooled that a 5 week course will teach you more. They will crowd your mind with hard to execute techniques that in fact, could cause more danger for you. Most women, after they take a self defense course, walk away thinking they would be ready and prepared for a situation months after their course; not true. To illustrate, picture two strangers walking past each other in a city park. Unbeknownst to one, there is a bee buzzing around his head. The other person sees this and, trying to be friendly, reaches quickly towards the other to try and swat the bee away. The person with the bee by his head sees a stranger’s hand dart towards his face and violently hits the other person’s hand away. While this would normally amount to an assault, a court could easily find that the movement of a stranger’s hand towards a person’s face would cause a reasonable man to conclude that he was in danger of immediate physical harm, which would render the use of force a justifiable exercise of the right of self-defense. All this in spite of the fact that the perceived assailant meant no harm; in fact, he was actually trying to help!
