However, I do think that carrying a stun-gun as a backup is a very good idea. If your attacker is right on top of you, it will be very difficult to be able to hit your attacker right in the face. A stun-gun has the advantage of being able to target any part of the body. Stun guns are also very affordable (~10$) so it won’t cost you much to have to add it to your self-defense options.
History: Translated from the Japanese, Judo means “gentle way,” which might seem a bit oxymoronic when you consider that it is a fighting style. That is, until you understand it’s roots. Kanō Jigorō, the fighting styles founder was the grandson of a Shinto priest and had an academic upbringing. When he was just fourteen years old, he was sent to Japan for school where he sought out a Jujutsu teacher to help him defend himself against bullying. Struggling to find a teacher and jumping from school to school over a period of years, Kanō Jigorō instead decided to start his own practice that more closely incorporated his peaceful philosophy and would, at the time, be more accepted than Jujutsu by a more westernized Japan. His system would go on to be incorporated into the Olympic Games in 1932 as a competitive sport and would remain popular through today, even being used by famous MMA fighters like Ronda Rousey and Rick Hawn.
The combination of weight training and hitting a heavy bag will do much to relieve stress. Those that live in “tough neighborhoods” will also be able to relieve their stress because they will have less fear of being attacked and actually getting hurt. They will have the knowledge that they can fight back against anyone which boosts confidence and greatly relieves stress.
Additionally, Boxing training helps to sharpen awareness. This enables boxers to be able to react quickly, make fast decisions and choose the right moves to execute during a fight. These are definitely skills that not only come in handy in the ring but also in the streets.
I have compiled a list of martial arts for you, and I will give my honest view on each one and its ability for self-defence. Now while I have listed these arts in a number fashion that is not because I am ranking them in any particular order. Everyone’s needs are different and as such what works for one will not necessarily work for another. However these are the ten most solid martial arts out there, and you cant really go wrong with any of them.
The best training tool to get first is not even a DVD. It’s our book. It can serve as your life-long, in-depth manual to this unusual system of self-defense. Even after repeated readings over many years, our high level students are still finding new insights in the text and pictures.
Chin Na: Well known in China, but rarely heard of in the West, chin na is a set of techniques using joint locks and pressure points to manipulate and control an opponent. Some of the techniques have a certain practicality, if you wish to put your attacker in some type of martial arts hold, while you wait for the police to arrive (I suppose). It would be very difficult to find an instructor or a class this side of the Pacific, though. And mistakes made in practice can result in strains, dislocations, and other injuries. I’d like to learn a few of the more practical techniques, but that’s about it.
We preserve the so-called peace of our community by deeds of petty violence every day. Look at the policeman’s billy and handcuffs! Look at the jail! Look at the gallows! Look at the chaplain of the regiment! We are hoping only to live safely on the outskirts of this provisional army. So we defend ourselves and our hen-roosts, and maintain slavery. . . . I think that for once the Sharps rifles and the revolvers were employed in a righteous cause [i.e., Brown’s insurrection].
Manufactured by Magtech, this product comes with 1000 rounds altogether. The 1000 rounds are divided into boxes and cases where there are 50 rounds per box as well as 20 boxes for case. That being said, they are arranged neatly, in an organized manner for easy handling.
BJJ is a great art to train in for fitness, fun and sport and yes it does have some great self-defence applications, however it also areas that are weak such as striking, knife defence a vulnerability to group attacks
The downside of Karate for me was the overuse of blocks, as I am of a boxing background I have always felt that Karate was quite ‘stiff’. However that is not always a bad thing, and we have seen MMA fighters such as Lyota Machida do very well in the cage using Karate as a base.
