Sport based systems, such as kickboxing, Muay Thai, Boxing, Savate, Shoot Boxing, Sanshou, Grappling, Judo, BJJ, Sambo, MMA and Wrestling are not generally suited for Self-Defense, and therefore are purely sport oriented.
This includes a wide variety of arts (Luta Livre, Freestyle Wrestling, Folk Wrestling), so it’s kind of a combination art. However, the idea remains the same: combine wrestling (which has been proven effective in MMA and street fighting) with submissions from a multitude of disciplines. What you get is a great transitional martial art in which a practitioner can get an opponent to the ground and finish him off with various chokes and joint locks, most of them pretty brutal.
We maintain that the way to judge *effective* self-defense training for the “average person” is that a MAJORITY of the class needs to focus on issues other than the physical. The physical is only one small layer of skill sets.

Muscles will not properly stretch unless they are warmed up, so it’s a good idea to arrive early to your Krav Maga class if you want to allow enough time for a short warm up and stretching session. Parking a few blocks away from class and walking is an easy way to warm up your muscles and have them ready to stretch by the time you get there. The problem is that most people do not differentiate between self-defense and fighting. And this is a critical distinction. Our definition of self-defense is simple. Any physical/mechanical means you use to get away from immediate danger and escape to safety.

Principles: While other Japanese practices such as Judo and Aikido focus most heavily on redirection and throwing, Jiu-Jitsu (while still having some of the same basis), is much more closely related to wrestling.
