Jujitsu is best when combined with Judo. When learning Jujitsu, you learn various choke holds, arm bars, leg bars, and other maneuvers you can use to manipulate your opponent. Unfortunately, if a jujitsu fighter can’t close the distance against someone like a Boxer, who learns how to distance properly, then that person may never get the chance to take the fight to the ground.

Safety is the most common reason someone might be interested in a self-defense workout. Not only will a person feel safer and more confident, they will be almost fearless when out in public. Add to that the fun and amusement that self-defense workouts bring to those who partake in it, and the ultimate attribute, discipline.

I am considering krav maga but I do like the martial art aspect of aikido, as an already experienced martial artist, do you think Yoshinkan Aikido would be an effective path to take? Or should I just not waste my time in it and commit to krav?

No matter which martial art you learn, you are unlikely to prevail against an attacker armed with a gun. If your martial arts instructor spends any time teaching you how to kick a gun out of an attacker’s hand, find another instructor.

The projectile travels upon entering the muzzle at a velocity of 900 fps and a muzzle energy measuring 333 foot pounds. Another plus point is that, it positively feeds well without the least probability of getting jammed. It also fires clean, but don’t use this as an excuse to not clean your weapon because frequent and proper maintenance is essential for the best shooting performance.

In addition to the MMA Base preparing you for contact, the delivery systems or styles used in MMA are highly efficient and effective bases from which to launch attacks. And, training in them will teach you to manipulate and control distance and position against an aggressive opponent.

Anything with lots of conditioning, high kicks etc, may be ok for today, though you wont be able to kick high forever and not the best thing to use kicking wise in a street fight, as easy to spot. Better low kick, groin height, faster, easier and will do job intended….

There is only one stance to know, and when you see it one time, you can do it: “the thinking man,” with the hands clasped on the head, and the elbows raised to protect the head, neck and upper chest. It looks like a man holding his head while deep in thought.

I am looking into learning a martial art which will help me know how to defend myself against a knife attacks and just in general from street fights. I would like to take my brother with me who gets bullied at school and I am wondering what martial art you would recommend. A local instructor not too far from me teaches Wing Chun and another teaches Tae Kwon Do, so would any of these be a good option? Cheers

Isolating a default response for repitition (in order to train it over and over again so that it becomes a conditioned response) is the primary method used here. By isolating a default response and using it against a particular attack, you can train it safely with full power, as your partner knows what to expect and how to deal with the response.

The samurai were deadly with weapons, like the sword and bow, but if they were ever disarmed, they needed a way to defend themselves. Jujutsu was developed to help these fierce warriors if they found themselves without a weapon.

The isolation phase is where a practitioner improves the mechanics and qualities of a technique and learns to apply it against an opponent. It can involve a variety of training methods including solo practice in the air or on pads/bags/shields, limited or prearranged drilling with a partner against a prearranged attack or response, and live training within a limited technical context. Isolation phase training is done forever, both to improve the execution of techniques and to increase qualities such as speed, power, and timing.

Chin Na: Well known in China, but rarely heard of in the West, chin na is a set of techniques using joint locks and pressure points to manipulate and control an opponent. Some of the techniques have a certain practicality, if you wish to put your attacker in some type of martial arts hold, while you wait for the police to arrive (I suppose). It would be very difficult to find an instructor or a class this side of the Pacific, though. And mistakes made in practice can result in strains, dislocations, and other injuries. I’d like to learn a few of the more practical techniques, but that’s about it.

Richard calls it the “Give it a Name Game.” It’s a way to make yourself track any unusual things you’re seeing or hearing. If it’s a sound, it’s as simple as looking toward the source, whether it’s honking or footsteps or a dog barking. Then you give it a name, like “shitty cab driver” or “tiny yappy dog.” Then you do the same with your peripheral vision. “At any given moment when you’re outside, there’s tons of shit happening … anything coming toward you, just toward you, acknowledge it. Just turn around, look at it, and acknowledge what it is.”

The second danger is a commitment to the notion of a sovereign subject, which is the centerpiece of authoritarian political ideologies and motivates so many reactionary movements. The growing number of white militias, the sovereign citizen movement, as well as major shifts in interpretations of the Second Amendment and natural rights, are contributing to an increasingly influential politics of self-defense with a sovereign subject at its core. For this sovereign subject—whose freedom can only be actualized through domination—the absolute identification with abstract individual rights always reflects an implicit dependency on state violence, much the way Nechayev’s revolutionist implicitly relies on a community he refuses to acknowledge. The sovereign subject’s disavowal of the social conditions of its own possibility produces an authoritarian concept of the self, whose so-called independence always has the effect of undermining the conditions of freedom for others.

Are you fighting a single opponent or multiple people? Does your opponent have a weapon? Are you fighting in a cramped space or an open space? Are you fighting for your life or just to get an aggressive drunk off of you?

“The techniques taught in C.O.B.R.A.™ are quick. They are gross motor skills… It was that quick, that effective and I was able to maintain control of the situation which otherwise would have been chaotic.”

No matter which way you spin it, the only self-defense tool you’re going to definitely have on you at all times is your own body. And while that might be a hard pill to swallow for some die hard tactical gear heads out there, it’s an unfortunate truth. Having said that, it doesn’t mean that you need to be completely defenseless if caught without your gear. You can turn your own body into a weapon by learning a martial art.

Krav Maga should teach you the basics and proficiency of self defence within 6 months depending on your own commitment. Muay Thai is also not a bad option but for self defence I would rather recommend Krav Maga. All the best

There are many products that are marketed specifically for female use. Some products (such as OC spray and tasers) can be disguised to look like a thing of lipstick. This allows for inconspicuous concealment and the ability to surprise an attacker.
