1.) I am considering Aikido and also cross-training in Krav Maga since I have heard that Aikido takes so long to master. My choices for the above are because I have heard that Aikido is a good self-defense martial art that allows you to defend yourself w/o having to seriously injure the opponent. The downside is that it takes a long time to learn it to the point where it is effective / you can properly apply it. This is where Krav Maga comes in. It seems to cover the areas where Aikido might be lacking in the beginning. I also chose Aikido because I am thinking it is something I can continue doing into my 50’s as well. Are Aikido and Krav Maga a good combination or would you recommend something else?

There are of course many people that would disagree, however having met a few Wing Chun instructors I have really had my views changed over the years, as I too failed to see the structure behind the art.  The power of Wing Chun lies within its direct approach. Hi martial artist. I was told that it is not good to learn striking arts if you lift weights, because weight lifting is a pushing motion while striking is a snapping motion. I personally think Moni just incorporated the word Krav Maga as a sales gimmick to attract people. I actually found a lot of similarities between Combat Krav Maga (CKM) and Combat Sambo, probably because both arts have roots in Jiu Jitsu.

Thanks to its effective grappling techniques, it is also widely used amongst MMA fighters. Though it has some limitations when it comes to striking techniques, its focus on tug-of-war type drills with partners has proven to aid its practitioners to succeed in real life altercations.

Yoga is an excellent practice to complement your Krav Maga training. It increases flexibility, balance, and awareness, all of which can go a long way in keeping you alert and ready to defend yourself. If you have the means, taking an additional yoga class is a great idea, but if not, taking 15 to 20 minutes each day to practice a basic yoga poses at home will still help.

On false move in Judo, you get thrown and the match is over. There is a certain intensity and finality in Judo that is not matched in other sports. Wrestling, Boxing and especially BJJ train you to be patient and create openings. In Judo there is that element of knowing that if you misstep by an inch can end the match. Krav Maga should teach you the basics and proficiency of self defence within 6 months depending on your own commitment. Muay Thai is also not a bad option but for self defence I would rather recommend Krav Maga. All the best
