The question, however, as others on this thread have indicated, is which martial art makes sense for you in terms of the time you will dedicate to it. These are very personal choices, and I always recommend that someone who is interested in martial arts visit a number of different schools of different styles, always interview the instructors to understand the school’s philosophy (and to determine if the instructors are of good character — which is very important), then try a couple of classes to see if it’s something that you will be willing to dedicated at least the next five years of your life to practicing. Because that’s how long it takes at a minimum to become proficient enough that you can say you are a fighter, not a martial dancer.
“I am an American boxer. Years ago, I was walking down the street one night in college and two guys walking toward me block my path and tell me to give my wallet. One is about 6’2″, the other about 5’9″ (I am 5’7″). I told them to leave me alone and tried to walk around the big one. He pushed me back. At this point, I backed up and moved laterally, putting the big one between me and the little one. (I only wanted to deal with one threat at a time and biggest came first) so without wasting any time I threw a tight right hook to his head, which put him on his knees. I threw a right shovel hook to his lowered head and knocked him unconscious. Now his smaller friend, in a panic, fell back on the ground. He started to hit me in the back of the head, which from his position just felt like raindrops. I postured up and locked my right arm against his left shoulder before dropping my left forearm directly on his jaw, also leaving him unconscious.” – Unknown from a Reddit forum).

Hey! I’m a single mother-to-be looking for a place to start learning how to defend myself and my unborn child (after birth of course) so reading this definitely told me I was making the right decision, so thanks for writing it! As I told my dad earlier, I don’t have a man to protect me, so I’m gonna have to learn how to do it myself. Sounds like fun though ;-D
One thing that I do feel that is underestimated in the KFM training and hard to put into words is that there training cultivates ‘fighting spirit’. They call this the predator/ prey mentality and their drills develop this attitude to get you press the ‘switch’ in your mind that stops you thinking that you will become a victim and turns you into a ball of energy that is ready to fight.” – Andrew Holland of selfdefenceexpert.com
Fourth, they remove doubt. If you have established, external standards by which to judge when you are legally and morally justified to use violence in your defense then you will be able to act with grim, un-conflicted determination towards achieving the goal. This is not an emotional or subjective reaction, it is reacting to a known and identified threat.

“For five years I worked as a bouncer at a sports bar on weekends. One night, I grabbed a guy who started a fight by putting my right arm around his neck into a rear naked choke position. It broke his balance by putting my left hand in the small of his back and applied some pressure. By breaking his balance I was able to escort him to the door and get him outside. Just after I let him go I saw someone in the corner of my eye throw a haymaker punch at me so I ducked under it, grabbed the guy, slammed him up against the building and put my forearm in his throat. Since I had stopped his attack, I let him go. He was no longer a threat. Just as I did, he grabbed me by my upper arms and tried to swing me around and throw me to the ground. I ended up hitting him with six different rapid hand strikes – in both shoulders, both biceps, and both forearms which got him to let go of me, and I finished with a rear leg front kick to his groin which ended the attack.”

“Over the years I have been involved with boxing, karate, aikido, and mixed martial arts. I have never practiced a more interesting, useful and easily applied physical training program than Krav Maga.” -Lloyd Lowe
In order to understand what “self-defense” is, you must first understand what it is not. “Self-defense” is not martial arts training. Nor is it fighting. It is not getting in touch with your inner rage and channeling it into attacking someone who scared you. It is not simply mastering a set of physical skills (e.g. becoming a kung fu killer ninja or combat shooting expert). Nor is it something you can take a weekend seminar for and then forget until you need it.
Apart from that, it comes with brass casing which is rust-resistant when in contact with rain or moisture, therefore contributing to the durability of this product. Its priming style on the other hand is boxer-primed. That being said, it comes with a cup and anvil which makes it a whole lot easier to remove and replace the old primer and voila, convenient reloading.
A group linked to the Russian troll farm behind thousands of fake Facebook ads paid personal trainers in New York, Florida, and other parts of the United States to run self-defense classes for African Americans in an apparent attempt to stoke fear and gather contact details of Americans potentially susceptible to their propaganda.
The party making the attack may be resisted, and if several persons join in such attack they may all be resisted, and one may be killed although he may not himself have given the immediate cause for such killing, if by his presence and his acts he has aided the assailant.
Most critics of this art point out that it is nearly impossible for the average black belt to catch a person’s punch and turn fast enough to perform this move, but that’s not true. It’s actually a very easy move to learn and perfect.
R.A.D. Systems is a network of dedicated self-defense instructors established in 1989. This alliance of instructors believes that self-defense should be easy to learn, easy to retain, and relatively easy to employ during real confrontational situations. This alliance believes that self-defense training should be accessible and affordable for all individuals. The instructors believe their efforts to oppose violence will be more effective together, than as individuals. As a network they can assist one another with programs, equipment, references, experiences and insight. But most importantly, they honor each others’ teachings, allowing each of them to give every participant they train a lifetime return and practice invitation anywhere there is a R.A.D. Program being offered, at no cost!
Translated as ‘empty hand’ in English, Karate is a predominantly striking art that makes use of punching, kicking, knee & elbow strikes as well as open hand techniques such as palm-heel strikes and spear hands. It emphasizes using the practitioner’s hands and legs as main forms of defense, making it one of the most effective to use for self-defense.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, also known as BJJ, has gained its current popularity fame through the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) first, second, and fourth winner, the legendary Royce Gracie. He is renowned in his victories in defeating much larger opponents who had previously trained a variety of other styles. In BJJ, however, it is more advantageous for smaller practitioners to employ their bodies’ leverage, since the sport emphasizes on ground fighting.
A person may use force to defend a third person from attack. If the defender is mistaken, however, and the third party does not need assistance, most jurisdictions hold that the defender may be held liable in civil court for injuries inflicted on the supposed attacker. In criminal cases a defendant would be relieved of liability if she proved she had made a reasonable mistake.
Know how to extract yourself out of a bad situation as safely and efficiently as possible, and that includes de-escalation, fleeing, and having the skill and determination to use of superior and potentially deadly force (weapons like knives and guns), and the resolve to face the aftermath
We maintain that the way to judge *effective* self-defense training for the “average person” is that a MAJORITY of the class needs to focus on issues other than the physical. The physical is only one small layer of skill sets.
Elements of Wing Chun include close-quarters trapping of hands and feet; no kicks higher than the waist, since kicking higher than this leaves the groin and standing leg vulnerable; and simultaneous attack/defense (see #1).
