The full metal jacket characteristics on the other hand ensures it has an excellent feeding system as well as provides deep penetration due to its heavy bullet weight. Therefore, if you plan on target shooting at long ranges, this product is a must have for you!
This does two things: 1. open hands are FAR more brutal that closed fists, and it offers a wider range of techniques. 2. This stance, with hands open, gives the appearance, to an untrained attacker that you are scared or trying to back away. It’s great for the passive aggressive fighter.” – Unknown (Sourced from a Reddit forum).
“I have a story that comes from a self-defense class that I teach. We were doing a simple version of kote-gaeshi , with myself as the “goon”, who would attack the women in the class, so that they get a feel for doing things for real. Well, one of the students had learned it a lot faster than I thought and applied it a lot harder and faster than you usually see in regular Aikido classes (where I study, we usually “ease up” at the end, to allow our partner a chance to fall cleanly). She, of course, didn’t ease up, because I had never thought to tell her she should. I managed to get about halfway into a break fall when I hit the ground, which just so happened to position the shoulder of the arm being twisted directly under the rest of my body. My entire weight came down on it, very hard. It ended up that I couldn’t use that arm effectively for 2 to 3 weeks afterward.
Martial arts are great as spectator sports and a good way to get fit, but they really come into their own when they are used in self-defense – undoubtedly the ultimate result for many of them. This list looks at ten of the best martial arts for if you are especially interested in defending yourself against attackers.
I would add one dimension, which DJ MacIntyre touched upon: are you training for a specific threat, or just in general? This actually is far more important than most people realize. All martial arts training requires trade offs, so one way of approaching any martial art is to ask yourself if the techniques and philosophy comport with your reasons for studying it. For example, if you are the average middle class woman, living in a reasonably safe city or town, how much danger do you ever expect to find yourself in? Couple that with how much dedication do you have to learn a martial art, and that will help you choose a style or school.
First and foremost, this product is specifically manufactured by the Winchester Supreme Elite. There are a total of 20 rounds in the box for about $23 (like I said, it is a little pricey!). In terms of usage, it is commonly used for self or personal defense where you just need to use a few bullets at a time, unlike range or field training. In my opinion, 20 bullets is more than enough if you plan on using it for home defense.
Simply walk toward the attacker (who has any weapon but a gun), and throw a front kick straight up against his chin as hard as possible. Kickboxing thrives on this sort of move, and teaches the practitioner to execute it with such extreme speed, faster than the attacker can react, that it virtually rules out the risk of “fancy kicks.” Do it correctly and it will almost always break his jaw, crush his larynx, shatter his teeth, force him to bite off his tongue, etc. He will not fight after this. This sort of kick is well trained to the point that it can, in fact, be delivered efficiently, that is, quickly and powerfully, without being telegraphed.
What makes Krav Maga so effective when it comes to self-defense is its emphasis on reality based training where the main goal is to neutralize the attacker(s) as fast as possible. There are no set rules or routines in Krav Maga. And unlike many other disciplines, you are encouraged to execute defensive and offensive moves simultaneously in order to protect yourself from harm.

Skills learned in the C.O.B.R.A.™ self-defense program are to be used in real life situations. This is not a sport or a point match. In real life you do not get to pick your bad guy. He/she will almost always pick the time, place and/or method of attack. You will never get this luxury. We train our students with this in mind. This is why C.O.B.R.A.™ was developed to be extremely effective in real life.
Succeeded by Marine Cops Martial Arts Program in recent years, it was relatively inflexible especially for non-emergent situations such as peacekeeping operations, because its main objective is to end the life of your opponent.
By this we mean that a wide variety of skill-sets, knowledge, self-awareness and behaviors are involved. Many, that at first glance, might not be obviously related to what you think of as “self-defense.” But each adds an important layer onto the whole of the subject, and therefore, your safety. As such you must consciously focus on all of these layers if you wish to be save from violence.

Chin Na: Well known in China, but rarely heard of in the West, chin na is a set of techniques using joint locks and pressure points to manipulate and control an opponent. Some of the techniques have a certain practicality, if you wish to put your attacker in some type of martial arts hold, while you wait for the police to arrive (I suppose). It would be very difficult to find an instructor or a class this side of the Pacific, though. And mistakes made in practice can result in strains, dislocations, and other injuries. I’d like to learn a few of the more practical techniques, but that’s about it.
Sport based systems, such as kickboxing, Muay Thai, Boxing, Savate, Shoot Boxing, Sanshou, Grappling, Judo, BJJ, Sambo, MMA and Wrestling are not generally suited for Self-Defense, and therefore are purely sport oriented.
The center also dives into the thorny thicket of how often the presence of a gun stops a crime — either violent or against property, such as a burglary — from happening. The gun lobby trots out an annual figure of 2.5 million such instances. But an analysis of five years’ worth of stats collected by the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey puts the number much, much lower — about 67,740 times a year.
The conditioning in boxing is one of the most strict and most punishing regimes in martial arts. Skipping, press ups, burpees and much more will make up a boxing session along with sparring and bag work.
The projectile travels upon entering the muzzle at a velocity of 900 fps and a muzzle energy measuring 333 foot pounds. Another plus point is that, it positively feeds well without the least probability of getting jammed. It also fires clean, but don’t use this as an excuse to not clean your weapon because frequent and proper maintenance is essential for the best shooting performance.
First, I could pull up on his arm so he didn’t hit the ground full force after the throw. I also had him on the ground with his wrist in my hand so I could control him with it so he couldn’t come at me again. I applied pressure to his wrist to make him realize his situation and asked him to let me enjoy the show. He finally got the picture and agreed to leave me alone.” – Unknown (Sourced from a Quora forum)
The reason we say that simple question of ‘what style is best’ is BS is because it assumes there’s some kind of Wal-mart Supercenter of self-defense training. A magical system/martial art that addresses all of those elements of self-defense. One that not only will allow you to easily defeat slavering hordes of Uzi carrying ninjas but automatically downloads critical thinking, threat assessment, a legal understanding of use of force laws, social dynamics, human behavior and the nature of violence directly into your brain…
There are of course many people that would disagree, however having met a few Wing Chun instructors I have really had my views changed over the years, as I too failed to see the structure behind the art. The power of Wing Chun lies within its direct approach. In the art, the practitioner becomes very strong and has almost laser targeted strikes to the face, a bit like being hit with a pole, repeatedly.
All “self-defense” is is taking these same skill sets and applying them in a slightly different context. To a large degree, they are the same skills with some slight “tweaks.” Properly applied, you will never have to use physical force protect yourself because you will learn to steer yourself clear from situations where violence is likely.
The other option is start training in a traditional martial art, not a sport oriented art. This will help make you a thirty-something woman in great shape and capable of defending yourself. There are no quick fixes, no one class cures, only hard work will leave you capable of defending yourself and it will take time. It will boost confidence and that along might discourage an attack.
The most popular and commonly told history of Wing Chun is the story of the Buddhist Nun, Ng Mui. It’s said she created Wing Chun to be a martial arts style that could be effectively used regardless of a person’s size, weight or gender.
Taekwondo is Korean form of martial art, which originated and was developed in South Korea especially around Seoul. It’s characterized by its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks. The techniques of taekwondo were initially developed from elements of karate and Chinese martial arts but later on, further developments were made, which over time gave way to the modern form of taekwondo, a widely practiced form of martial arts today. The South Korean Armed forces have adopted taekwondo as their major form combat technique. Taekwondo became an Olympic event in the year of 2000.Interestingly India has also a made a Taekwondo federation back in the year 1969 for the betterment of this sport.
History: This fighting style traces back as far as the 16th century during the conflict between the Burmese of the Konbaung Dynasty and Siam. And while it was definitely intended as a form of combat to be used in battlefield situations, it quickly became a competitive recreational sport. Also known as the “Art of Eight Limbs” or the “Science of Eight Limbs,” Muay Thai became famous for its unique combination of and expansion upon boxing and kickboxing, in which users don’t just strike with their hands and feet, but also their elbows and knees.…Famous for its unique combination of and expansion upon boxing and kickboxing. In the early 1900s, Muay Thai would begin to become integrated into western fighting schools and, eventually, would develop its own federation (IFMA) and would become integrated inexorably into MMA, with some of the top combatants in the world ranking amongst its students – including Anderson Silva, Wanderlei Silva, Michael Bisbing, and Cris Cyborg.

When you laser in on “winning,” you leave yourself open to lose. If for example your goal is to win a fight using your martial arts, you will actually end up lengthening the time of the engagement, increasing the chances of losing. You not only boost the chance of your opponent coming up with a more effective strategy, but you also increase the length of time you are in his “line of fire.” This also increases the time during which you can make a mistake when countering his offensives.
