Aikido: Amusingly and affectionately termed “combat yoga” by its practitioners. Depending on the instructor and the sub-style of aikido, it can be half philosophy and half martial arts practice. Half of one class might be devoted to learning how to walk “with ki”. Self-defense is not the primary purpose of aikido.
As you can see the issues become larger and more complex the further away one gets from just the physical. A critical issue is that  many so-called “self-defense” courses/martial arts schools do not address these “higher” level skills  because they assume they already are in place. We do not. We have seen countless incidents of violence that could have been avoided if they had been.
Self-Defense Training Camp involves teaching players how to perform martial arts-based techniques and various forms of tai chi,[1][3] along with self defense. There are four selectable game modes on the main menu: “Cardio Workout”, “Balance Practices”, “Self Defense Rehearsal”, and “Reflex Training”. In “Cardio Workout”, players perform “martial arts fitness workouts”, such as punches and kicks. “Balance Practices” involves doing yoga-style stretches. Knives, especially those categorized as switchblades may also be controlled, as may batons, pepper spray and personal stun guns and Tasers – although some may be legal to carry with a licence or for certain professions.

There are hundreds if not thousands of martial arts styles out there but I’ve put together a list of the best of the best. Knowing any one of them (especially #1) can turn your body into a veritable weapon.
I would recommend BJJ as in my personal experience, the smaller the fighter, the better. BJJ works a lot on technique, speed and skill rather than strength and size. In my own club it is usually the smaller fighters that defeat their bigger counterparts when grappling so it will be ideal for your body type. It is also not too intensive on the body so injuries will be minimal to none. When you become comfortable in martial arts, you will find that you will want to try out Krav Maga as well. All the best!
Personally im a huge fan of martial arts as a being a big part of your life and a bit of a philosophy, like for example the tenants of TaeKwonDo I think are great to live by, but even still I wouldnt put TKD forward as suitable for self defence, its just hugely inefficient to learn, it takes years to be good enough at it to be really suitable for self defence as learning basic self defence quickly isnt what it is designed for, it is designed to train you to kill people.

So following this line of thinking, if you are the average middle aged woman in a relatively safe city, it is extremely unlikely that you will ever find yourself having to fight for your life; or if so, it is extremely unlikely that you will have to do so against a well trained opponent. So no need to achieve ninja status. For most types of situations in which most women will find themselves relying on a martial art, they need to break an attack (often from someone they know) and get away. In these circumstances, a style such as judo, jiu jitsu or aikido is perfect. Their attacker will probably be grabbing them, and all these arts teach their practitioners to redirect their opponent’s energy and counterattack with throws or locks, and each style uses a larger person’s weight against him.

Can you execute a double leg takedown or triangle choke? Well, you’ll be able to find out every night in class. Point fighting that’s done in typical martial arts classes “assume” success. You pull your punches and stop after a score. Make no mistake, you will do this when you are under the stress of a real fight. This is why in the SDTS we train to hit with 100% power all of the time. Training is about developing habits. The right habits will save your life and the wrong habits will get you in trouble. 
Through the Olympic Games, films (especially kung-fu movies), intramural sports, and the ever-pervasive internet – martial arts have become a well-known part of popular culture. But, some forms of it are better for self-defense than others. That’s not to say that they are not effective forms of exercise or even combat when practiced by devoted experts. We just know that one, the average person doesn’t have a lifetime to dedicate to a fighting style, and two, most self-defense situations call for a quick no-nonsense response in which disabling your attacker as fast as possible is the end goal. Remember, these are not your only options, but we believe they are the most ideal to protect yourself in worst-case scenario.
All Martial Arts are good for the young and fast. But speaking for the senior set a firearm, with the appropriate training, is best. If you live in a non-constitution state, or just don’t like firearms, then a walking cane is appropriate. A cane can be carried anywhere, and with minimum training can be a very effective self-defense weapon.

The training is broken up into two phases: the first focusing on building mass and learning basic movements, the second on building strength and conditioning. Each phase lasts about 6 weeks. After the 12 weeks, a one week break should be taken. This program can be repeated, but after the first time, a one week break should be taken every 6 weeks to prevent overtraining.

In 1981, the Krav Maga Association of Israel and the Israeli Ministry of Education held the very first International Instructor’s Course for Krav Maga. Darren Levine was hand-picked for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He trained under Krav Maga founder Imi Lichtenfeld, earned his black belt & full instructor’s certification and brought Krav Maga to the United States.
Goetz fled the scene and traveled north to New Hampshire. On December 31, 1984, he turned himself in to police in Concord, New Hampshire. Goetz was returned to New York where he was indicted on a charge of criminal possession of a weapon. The state fought for a second Grand Jury, and Goetz was eventually indicted a second time on charges of attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment. At trial Goetz argued that he had acted in self-defense, and a jury convicted him only of illegal gun possession. Ultimately Goetz was sentenced to one year in jail and fined $5,000.

When I was attacked by a knife mugger, I was actually curious about how my body would react and with what art I studied it would defend. It was indeed Krav Maga, but most probably because it was the most natural reaction.

Note that we’re not talking about some elaborate ruse here — the point is that if it’s clear that force is necessary, don’t telegraph it or warn them (if they initiated it, they already think they can win the fight).
