Personally, I would also recommend medical training as that’s more likely to save a life than self defense classes. And I’d also suggest weapons training so you have a myriad of tools (and defense against those tools) at your disposal should you need them.
You may be attacked by more than one opponent, thus you need to train for that possibility. While it’s extremely difficult to fight multiple opponents with sport based rules, it can be done in a no rules environment, especially where weapons are allowed. A hard finger jab to the eye of one attacker, for example, can put him out of commission while you deal with the second. Training methods where you practice blasting through multiple opponents in order to run or get a better position are also a necessity.

Personally im a huge fan of martial arts as a being a big part of your life and a bit of a philosophy, like for example the tenants of TaeKwonDo I think are great to live by, but even still I wouldnt put TKD forward as suitable for self defence, its just hugely inefficient to learn, it takes years to be good enough at it to be really suitable for self defence as learning basic self defence quickly isnt what it is designed for, it is designed to train you to kill people.

The best way to train is to be task-specific. That means if you want to be good at self-defense, you need to train for self-defense, not martial arts (and again – learn martial arts for exercise, discipline, etc to your heart’s content, just know that you aren’t training for self-defense).
Self-defense Classes: Same problem as MMA. The classes are highly variable in techniques and quality, depending mainly on whatever the instructor decides to teach. Some self-defense instructors also teach one or another style of martial arts. They then adapt some martial arts techniques to a course designed to impart useful skills in as few lessons as possible.
