The second reason for clarification is to distinguish the strategies, ways of theorizing, and forms of social relations of liberatory movements from those of reactionary movements. There is an increasingly influential understanding of self-defense today that reinforces a particular notion of the self—a “sovereign subject”—that is corrosive to horizontal social relations and can only be sustained vis-à-vis state power. Original Jiu Jitsu has its roots in Japan in the 1500’s, but in the early 20th Century, a Japenese master taught the art to a family of Brazilians (the Gracies), and they truly made it their own. Relying less on brute force attacks, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu uses leverage and an opponent’s strength to his or her disadvantage. In the early UFC competitions, you can see this in action—Royce Gracie defeating much larger opponents with takedowns and submissions. People are more aware of this fighting style now. You can’t know only this one practice and be successful in MMA, but it’s a very useful martial art if you ever find yourself in a street fight. The only downside is the emphasis on pure ground fighting. It’s helpful to also know throws and takedowns, but some gyms don’t teach those skills if they’re more focused on sport Jiu Jitsu.

Anyone who has grown up in a tough neighborhood, and has fought seasoned street fighters or multiple assailants knows how far solid wrestling, boxing and judo training can go. Any prison inmate knows a person with a solid wrestling or boxing background is a formidable opponent…point blank. And anyone who has a little street experience knows how far the average Karate/Kung-Fu training will get you in a real life confrontation with a committed, aggresive, experienced and fit opponent who will fight through pain and injury. Not that Karate or Kung Fu are defunct, only the way that they are trained in American schools does not prepare the students to defend themselves against a committed, experienced and large street fighter the way amateur boxing and wrestling do. My of the ‘lethal’ strikes that are taught sound great in theory and could work in the hands of a master, but are not enough against an angry committed assailant where much of the sport techniques and the presence of mind that boxing and wrestling develop can save your life. I’ve been grabbed from behind and before I realized what I was doing, I applied inside slip in from hs wrestling and had turned tables on my opponent before I consciously realized he was my opponent)

Warming up and stretching is important prior to a workout, but it’s definitely impossible to get the best self defense training if you don’t stretch after each session. It can be challenging to make yourself take the time to stretch once your class is completed, especially if you’re attempting to fit Krav Maga training into an already-busy life. However, if you don’t make the time, you’ll be missing out on many of the benefits of training, and you might even be doing more harm than good.

Much of wrestling or boxing training involves sparring with better, bigger, faster, more conditioned opponents and being on the losing end. A judoka is not going to panic when he suddenly finds himself in a choke hold nor will a boxer completely fall apart when he takes an unexpected blow.

Well, that’s where prevention comes in, and that starts with paying attention. Violent street criminals, like most of us, prefer doing things the lazy way. In their world, that means picking easy targets. They like sucker-punching (or stabbing) distracted people, using the element of surprise to end a confrontation before it begins. With practice, though, you can adopt the posture of someone who can’t be surprised.

Sport based systems, such as kickboxing, Muay Thai, Boxing, Savate, Shoot Boxing, Sanshou, Grappling, Judo, BJJ, Sambo, MMA and Wrestling are not generally suited for Self-Defense, and therefore are purely sport oriented.

Although Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) has a tight learning curve, especially regarding the sticks, it’s definitely one of the most potent arts I have ever practiced. The knife fighting is ever developing since new ways to cut and defend with a knife are constantly incorporated into the syllabus. The multi-layer approach is back-up. To be more specific it is having options that prevent you from ending up in that situation. Including, not going parachute jumping in the first place, but if you do, knowing how to pack your chute so it will open. By having these layers, you have control and influence anywhere along the process. It is also knowing the further down that path you go, the more extreme the danger and the more likely you are to lose control of the situation.

First, You cannot focus on only one aspect and expect your “self-defense” to work. For example, physical application is the most basic and simplest skill set. It is also the last ditch, extreme response. If a situation goes physical it generally means you have not applied the other skill sets correctly. You have allowed the situation to develop to an extreme. Unfortunately, physical force is also the most unreliable of responses. And, as you are now in an extreme, if it fails, you are in deep trouble. It is literally jumping out of a plane with only one parachute that has a 50/50 chance of not working..

Beyond the despicable efforts to blame the victim and not the alleged gun-toting racist charged with the crimes, Cotton’s assertion reflects a common and romanticized argument by the gun lobby. If we were all armed, we would all be safe, an argument as devoid of humanity as it is of logic.
