The issues about behaviors that lead up to violence are of major import and should not be given lip-service or merely a passing nod while rushing off to learn how to hit someone. While it is obvious that you cannot get a full explanation of all the aspects of every level from a two-day seminar, such programs should at least  introduce you to the concepts involve. Also they need to be able to give you an indication where to do further research on your own.
The training is broken up into two phases: the first focusing on building mass and learning basic movements, the second on building strength and conditioning. Each phase lasts about 6 weeks. Masculinity and femininity, for example, are not natural categories: they are social roles within a social order and thus have a history just as racial groups do. Yet, like those of race, the social and symbolic relations of gender are not contingent. Indeed, masculinity and femininity exhibit a certain kind of logic that we find in every institutionalized form of social domination. Because gender is a way of hierarchically ordering human relations, the characteristics associated with the dominant group function to justify their domination. Group members are said to be, for example, stronger, more intelligent, and more moral and rational. Nearly every aspect of social life will reflect this, from the division of labor to the forms of entertainment.
Judo and Jujutsu: These martial arts are based on throws and different types of holds. Some of the individual techniques are useful. I just think that you need too many years of training in these techniques to defend against a strong attacker who punches and kicks. I’d like an instructor in some other martial art, who might add in a few judo or jujutsu techniques.
If your budget is tight, I will definitely recommend Muay Thai. It is not so specialized as Krav Maga therefore cheaper but still provides excellent self defence. Just have a look at the gun and knife disarms of Krav Maga on YouTube and add it to your arsenal as Muay Thai excludes such techniques. Muay Thai is used for Krav Maga’s striking techniques. Self-defense Classes: Same problem as MMA. The classes are highly variable in techniques and quality, depending mainly on whatever the instructor decides to teach. Some self-defense instructors also teach one or another style of martial arts. They then adapt some martial arts techniques to a course designed to impart useful skills in as few lessons as possible. It’s a good option, if you can find the right instructor.
If I find one who can (and how do I as completely inexperienced even judge that?), do I take a traditional Chinese martial art, or do I take Krav Maga, along with something like yoga, assuming that the kung fu of today will most likely either be ineffective or overly complex for self defense?
In martial arts training you can find depths far beyond the physical. There are many useful skills and attributes one can acquire through their study. Realistically, martial arts are like a large pool, you can go as deep or as shallow as you wish. That means you can safely focus on whatever particular aspect you find most fascinating. Simply stated martial arts can be deep, rich and fulfilling or as shallow and one-dimensional as you want it to be.
If you live in a higher risk environment, you might find it more useful to include significant striking skills. For me, that means kicks over punches, simply because kicks are more devastating. So I would prefer Taekwondo or karate over boxing. The assumption here is that the danger level is higher, so the need to disable your attacker very quickly becomes more important. A shattered kneecap does that more reliably than a throw.
