The course is physically and psychologically demanding. While not a martial arts program, it includes self-defense tactics and techniques. The training officers use pads and padded suits so students can practice what it is like to strike an aggressor. Students, faculty and staff can attend for free.
However despite these differences Krav Maga is one of the best martial arts for self defense.​ You will learn both  gun and knife defense along with striking, grappling and much more. The Combat Conditioning DVD is a tremendous, fun and essential training tool for the solo practitioner. However, in the interests of making a fun, fast, efficient and non-stop work out DVD, we excluded in-depth explanations of the exercises and what they do or how they apply to combat (although many drills end with a brief 5 second fighting demo of the skills practiced). In other words, they will look pretty strange if you’ve never seen Parts 1-3 or read our book. That said, if you trained with the Combat Conditioning DVD without knowing anything else, you couldn’t HELP but improve your overall Balance, Body Unity, Looseness, Sensitivity and freedom of movement. This is applicable to virtually any sport or physical activity requiring power and coordination.
The problem is that most people do not differentiate between self-defense and fighting. And this is a critical distinction. Our definition of self-defense is simple. Any physical/mechanical means you use to get away from immediate danger and escape to safety.
In The Souls of Black Folk (1903), W. E. B. Du Bois theorized black life in a white supremacist society as experiencing one’s self as split in two, a kind of internalization of a social division that produced what he called “double-consciousness,” or “this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity.” Although one may view oneself as capable, beautiful, intelligent, and worthy of respect, the social institutions one inhabits can express the opposite view. Part of the experience of oppression is to live this othering form of categorization in everyday social life. Even when one consciously strives to resist denigration and to hold fast to a positive self-relation, the social hierarchy insinuates itself into one’s self-understanding. In the most intimate moments of introspection, a unified self-consciousness escapes us because our self-understanding can never completely break from the social relations and ideologies that engender it. Social conflict is internalized, and it takes great strength just to hold oneself together; to live as a subject when others view and treat you as little more than an object, and when you are denied the freedoms, security, and resources enjoyed by others. Ultimately, only by undermining the social conditions of oppression through collective resistance can the double-consciousness Du Bois describes become one.

It incorporates Western boxing punches, Karate kicks and knees, Greco-Roman wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu ground fighting, Jiu-jitsu throws and grappling, and most importantly, “bursting,” adapted from Wing Chun. This is a simultaneous defense/attack: instead of blocking an attack and then delivering a response, you block the attack and deliver a response at the same time, i. e., block with the left arm and push forward with the legs, striking with the right fist to the throat, all simultaneously.
Since our location within social hierarchies in part determines our social identities, the self that develops is social and political from the start. This does not mean that we are “stuck” or doomed to a certain social identity or location, nor that we can simply decide to identify ourselves elsewhere within social hierarchies or somehow just exit them. To be sure, we have great leeway in terms of self-identification, but self-identification does not itself change institutional relations or degrees of agency, respect, risk, opportunity, or access to resources. These kinds of changes can only be achieved through social and political struggles. Our embodied identities are sites of conflict, formed and reformed through our practical routines and relations as well as through social struggle. Since the actions and perceptions of others are integral to the development of our own, including our self-understanding, we say that the self is mediated, or is formed through our relations with others in systems of production, consumption, education, law, and so forth.
Distinguishing between defensive and insurrectionary violence can be complicated. In the Amistad case, for example, white officials initially described it as a rebellion and thus a violation of the law, but later reclassified it as self-defense when the original enslavement was found to be unlawful. In a rare reversal, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized the captives on the Amistad as having selves worthy of defense. That was never in question among those rebelling, of course, but it does indicate the political nature of the self and our assessments of resistance. “Since the Other was reluctant to recognize me,” writes Fanon, “there was only one answer: to make myself known.” On the Amistad, rebellion was the only way for the enslaved to make their selves known, meaning that their actions were simultaneously a defense of their lives and a political claim to recognition.
There is no “best” training to learn self defense. No self defense fighting system is 100% guaranteed to make you fully prepared for self defense. There’s always going to be things that happen that are outside of your control and no amount of training will help you. Self defense requires much more than fighting. It involves diffusing potentially violent situations, avoiding and resolving conflict, being aware of your surroundings, knowing when to comply, knowing when to flee, etc. If you failed to recognize danger when you see it and learn to avoid it, you’ve already lost half the battle. This martial arts discipline focuses on teaching its practitioners to effectively defend themselves against a larger sized opponent using leverage and proper technique. Hence, it is as lethal when practiced by females as it is for males.
What I am saying is that there are different types of violence. What you think of as a ‘fight’ is such a minute number of these incidents that it hardly qualifies as a slice … it’s more like a sliver. Two equally matched opponents slugging it out or rolling around on the ground is the exception, not the rule of violence. Within those different types of violence are many different levels and participants can range from an upset person to a quarrelsome drunk, to a dangerous criminal to an insane person(2). While most incidents of violence are not intent on death and destruction, any number of them are … and that intent affects how they happen.
That’s in a nation in which there are some 300 million firearms, nearly one for every person (though only a little over a third of Americans own guns — and there’s an interesting take on that here, and on the ramifications of gun ownership on murder rates here, and while you’re reading links, this is of interest, too). This is also a nation in which, in 2012, there were 1.2 million violent crimes, defined as murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Or, put another way, 1.2 million scenarios in which there was potential for someone to kill in self-defense.
In terms of packaging on the other hand, they are usually packed in trays, in an organized manner. I know a guy who used Uchimata in the street and it actually worked TOO WELL. Because of adrenalin, the guy hit the throw so hard he actually over rotated. His attacker (not trained in anything) clung on him for dear life. They both slammed to the ground in the parking lot and got the wind knocked out of them.
Maybe over time, if you develop discipline and character… you’ll start to develop ‘good judgment’ which is one of the most important skills you can have, regardless of the situation you find yourself in.
The techniques I studied were similar to Muay Thai with the addition of and gun techniques. The reason I picked this art as one of my top five was its marginal simplicity, being a bit easier to master than the grappling forms of self-defence. It involves a lot of strikes rather than grabs making it easier to apply, since the area where the technique can be applied is much bigger than in grappling. I found almost all the techniques functional for a street situation. However, a few moves were exceptions and wouldn’t be so effective if common external factors, such as the attacker reacting in a resistant manner, kicked in. All in all, though, this art will teach you how to defend your life if necessary, even if your attacker is wielding a knife or a gun.
One of the best things people take away from self-defense classes is self-confidence. The last thing you want to be thinking about during an attack is, “Can I really pull this self-defense tactic off?” It’s much easier to take action in an emergency if you’ve already had a few dry runs.
Tae Kwon Do/Tang Soo Do- more sport than martial art in most cases. Nominal use in a real self defense situation. Again- depends on the instructor. Great for exceecise, and yes, a good sidekick can ruin any attackers day.
