A long time ago (too long to be of use to me today), I took some martial arts classes. They had a different attitude toward belts. You could take classes without ever testing for any belt. Once the instructor decided you were ready, you would move up from the beginner classes to the intermediate and then advanced classes without needed a particular belt level.
There are countless reasons why one may decide to train in martial arts. That said, one of the top and most common reasons is so that they can learn moves that can protect them from harm – or even potentially save their life one day.
Many people are familiar with the term “black belt” and associate it with having a very high ranking in the practice of martial arts. However, there is much more to the system of the martial arts belts, including the order of their rankings and what each color belt means.
But I think that some instructors in the U.S. have failed to adapt the techniques to more common self-defense scenarios for civilians. Let’s say some guy pushes you and says something vaguely threatening. Well, you are not thereby justified in treating him like an armed terrorist and beating him to near-death with krav maga. Force used in self-defense needs to be proportionate to the threat.

Many people think of self-defense as a karate kick to the groin or jab in the eyes of an attacker. But self-defense actually means doing everything possible to avoid fighting someone who threatens or attacks you. Self-defense is all about using your smarts — not your fists.

There are two primary training methods in this phase: random flowing and sparring. In random flowing there is a level of cooperation, where practitioners are helping each other to learn with a level of give-and-take. Specific goals may be worked on. McCaughey calls these self-defensive practices “feminism in the flesh,” because they are simultaneously resisting the violence of patriarchy, while reconfiguring and empowering one’s body and self-understanding. We could similarly think of the self-defensive practices of the Black Panthers, Young Lords, Deacons for Defense and Justice, Brown Berets, and the American Indian Movement as anti-racist, as decolonization in the flesh.

The threat can be verbal, as long as it puts the intended victim in an immediate fear of physical harm. Offensive words without an accompanying threat of immediate physical harm, however, do not justify the use of force in self-defense.
3.) I’d like to get them involved in a martial art. Is Aikido a good choice? My thinking is that since it takes a long time to master and they are so young, they would have time to practice and grow into it. Or is Aikido to much of a “by-gone” martial art? I have been around the martial arts for many years, and one thing that I know is that Karate is a very solid style of martial art. Almost everyone I have ever met who trained in Karate can hit hard and kick even harder. Karateka are also very fit, that speaks volumes for the fitness applications of the art.
