Brad Steiner: While this is a good point, it may not be the best tip for someone unskilled in karate. It does take a bit of dexterity and training before the elbow, per se, may be employed reliably as a weapon — especially by a woman in normal attire, against a large, strong male. I would recommend driving open and extended fingers-to-eyes, or using a chinjab followed by raising the elbow of the striking arm and then eye-gouging. BITING, if grabbed hold of, and kicking like crazy, is also good. Just opening the hand and whipping a surprise handaxe to the throat is also good. Head butting is effective. I would prefer these methods because, for the complete novice, they are more likely to be delivered with sufficient force and effectiveness to facilitate escape.
Sparring sports like boxing or MMA are not self-defense, either. They are fighting sports, and can make you kick ass in a ring setting, but they are not self-defense. And for some, being good at fighting is likely to work against you in self-defense situations, because you are more likely to think you can fight your way out of it, when fleeing is the much better option.
We do this through the MMA Base, which consists of boxing, Thai boxing, stand-up wrestling, and Brazilian jiu jitsu. You don’t have to become a high level MMA fighter, but you do need to train against completely uncooperative opponents attempting to kick, punch, and wrestle with you. Otherwise, you will not be prepared for it if it happens on the street.
Although de-escalation won’t always work, it can only help matters if you remain calm and don’t give the would-be attacker any extra ammunition. Whether it’s a stranger or someone you thought you could trust, saying and doing things that don’t threaten your attacker can give you some control.
The Keysi Method has almost no kicks of any kind. It thrives on extreme close-quarters combat using every weapon the body can quickly wield in such a small space: fists, head, knees, and especially the elbows.
If you study any martial art long enough, it should serve you well in a hand-to-hand type of self-defense situation. But from a prepping point of view, you don’t want to spend 20 years practicing before your chosen martial art is useful in a real world situation. So this post will review various martial arts, to see which ones provide the most useful skills and knowledge, in the least amount of training time… in my not-so-humble opinion.
I personally would give it a year to get him into martial arts. Kids like stability as that puts them in a optimum learning condition and I think for his age it will do him well as it also is a lot of fun because of the sport element. I personally prefer the ikmftoronto.com club because they focus more on situations then techniques and with his bjj background he might progress quicker then in the kravmagatoronto.com. But both are good options. Krav Maga is only a self defence art so it doesn’t have that sport element which helps kids develop healthy self image and teaches them perseverance and and a competitive spirit. You can also see if those KM clubs don’t have BJJ classes maybe included in the membership which will make things a lot easier. So in essence if viable for you I would keep him doing both. But it is a parent’s choice so it is up to you. If it is a non-issue for you and you just want to teach him proper self defence then the KM will be sufficient. All the best
The crowd in Helena was made up mostly of families and older men sporting hunting caps, beards and camouflage jackets. At one children marched up to the lectern and read written statements in support of guns.
Krav Maga is perhaps the most well know of any self defence system in the world.   The word Krav Maga in Hebrew means “contact fighting” and it is the official self defence system of the Israeli Defense Forces,
This is simply not realistic. A point we feel strongly about is that effective self-defense training focuses as much on your responsibility for your words/actions and the legal restrictions/repercussions of violence as it does your “right” to hit. A set of standards that you will find missing from much of so-called self-defense training can be found at Brandon Otto’s Introduction to Use of Force page.
The boxer-primed style in the most popular primer style in the United States. Most products in the Lucky Gunner website actually utilizes this primer style. So, let’s see what is all the fuss about? First things first, it comes with a cup and anvil which assists in removing and replacing the old primer, with a simple pin punch.
“For five years I worked as a bouncer at a sports bar on weekends. One night, I grabbed a guy who started a fight by putting my right arm around his neck into a rear naked choke position. It broke his balance by putting my left hand in the small of his back and applied some pressure. By breaking his balance I was able to escort him to the door and get him outside. Just after I let him go I saw someone in the corner of my eye throw a haymaker punch at me so I ducked under it, grabbed the guy, slammed him up against the building and put my forearm in his throat. Since I had stopped his attack, I let him go. He was no longer a threat. Just as I did, he grabbed me by my upper arms and tried to swing me around and throw me to the ground. I ended up hitting him with six different rapid hand strikes – in both shoulders, both biceps, and both forearms which got him to let go of me, and I finished with a rear leg front kick to his groin which ended the attack.”
Flexibility work is slow paced and requires a lot of patience. The last thing you want to do is attempt to force your body into a deeper stretch in an effort to speed up progress. It won’t work, and you’ll increase your chances of injury. Instead, approach your stretches slowly, breathing deeply and allowing gravity to gradually take you further into the stretch. Over time, you will see your flexibility begin to increase
“I can honestly say that this is without a doubt the best way to bring functional, realistic and useful self-defense to the public. I have been involved in the martial arts and self-defense industry for close to 30 years and have not seen anything like the C.O.B.R.A.™ program.”
Taekwondo: the real serious form of taekwondo is a Korean martial art that draws techniques from many other martial arts. It’s what MMA would be, if it were designed by traditional martial arts experts. The discipline involves various strikes with the hands and feet, from a mobile stance. There are also some take-downs, holds, and joint locks. However, the emphasis on speed and high kicks might keep some older and slower would-be martial artists from pursuing the discipline.
I would actually recommend BJJ as most of the techniques becomes muscle memory and although it looks like an intensive art on the body, it actually impacts the body a lot less. There are quite a few 80+ year olds still practicing the art and defeating their opponents, due to the way BJJ works. Proper technique will almost always defeat strength. Therefore as you grow older you learn to fight smarter and not harder. For the time being though it is not a bad idea to incorporate some Krav Maga as well, as they go hand in hand. All the best!
Black Belt Factories: Some martial arts studios are “black belt factories”. They can tell you how long it will take to obtain a black belt, often only a year or so. You learn a series of techniques and take belt tests frequently, going up the ladder of belt colors until you reach brown and then black. If you take the classes and the tests, and are not a complete klutz, you’ll get the belt.
This hybrid mixes Jiu-jitsu’s standing throws and strikes with ground fighting, which emphasizes joint manipulation and overall control of the opponent, effectively ending a fight very quickly. The larger the attacker, the more easily he can be grappled off his feet, using his center of gravity against him, and forcing him to submit (or pass out).
You may be wondering what the ‘ACP’ abbreviation stands for? To answer your question, it refers to Automatic Colt Pistol. The .45 ACP rounds are widely used for pistol ammunition. Not only that, it is also referred to .45 Auto which is basically a handgun cartridge.
Part 2 dives right into the heart of Guided Chaos with all the fundamental explanations of principles and radically different combat methodologies and drills. Without Part 2, many things on the other DVDs may not make much sense and it’ll take far longer to become competent.
Sport based systems, such as kickboxing, Muay Thai, Boxing, Savate, Shoot Boxing, Sanshou, Grappling, Judo, BJJ, Sambo, MMA and Wrestling are not generally suited for Self-Defense, and therefore are purely sport oriented.
“One guy hauls off and punches the other kid in the ribs and walks away. The kid didn’t feel it and he yells after the guy, ‘Fuck you, pussy! Your punches are weak!’ And he turns to cross the street, but now there’s traffic so he’s waiting, and about a minute into it, he starts to get dizzy and collapses, and my friend ran over and caught him, held him before he hit the ground. And I rushed over to see if the kid is OK, maybe an adrenaline dump, so he passed out … it turned out he wasn’t punched, he was stabbed, and he died in my friend’s arms that night.”
“I have a story that comes from a self-defense class that I teach. We were doing a simple version of kote-gaeshi , with myself as the “goon”, who would attack the women in the class, so that they get a feel for doing things for real. Well, one of the students had learned it a lot faster than I thought and applied it a lot harder and faster than you usually see in regular Aikido classes (where I study, we usually “ease up” at the end, to allow our partner a chance to fall cleanly). She, of course, didn’t ease up, because I had never thought to tell her she should. I managed to get about halfway into a break fall when I hit the ground, which just so happened to position the shoulder of the arm being twisted directly under the rest of my body. My entire weight came down on it, very hard. It ended up that I couldn’t use that arm effectively for 2 to 3 weeks afterward.
A less expensive and time-consuming path to the same end would be to watch a bunch of Hollywood martial arts movies, and then just buy a black-colored belt. Your level of training will be about the same.
The best way for women to protect themselves against violent attacks is to be prepared. There are martial arts classes in nearly every city that can help women learn the necessary skills to prevent and escape dangerous situations. The best way to find the right self defense class for women is to take that first step into a martial arts studio and try a class. Giving martial arts a try could be a live-saving decision.

Regardless of what one may believe, most fights will not end with one well placed punch. Being able to throw quickly and consistently is key, and therefore, having the cardiovascular ability to fight is important.
Thus, step to the side, creating a lateral line toward the attacker’s arm, strike the attacker’s punch or knife hand, then quickly strike his lower side, belly, or back with your other fist. This is very difficult to defend against, and most likely he will not be able to. Push forward and throw a knee into his quadriceps. This hurts like crazy.
Knives are a grey area for me personally, since they are not really considered non-lethal weapons. There exist a number of blades marketed for self defense, which are made to be concealable and foldable so you can carry them around at all times. If you decide to carry a knife for self defense, please consider the following points:
they take the opposite approach. They take an extremely narrow focus (often sport based) and try to conceptually expand it to cover ALL the different manifestations of violence, self-defense and personal safety.
We offer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes for kids, teens and adults. Classes are based on professional instruction in a safe environment. We offer classes 5 days a week for adults and teens and 4 days a week for kids.
Well, that’s where prevention comes in, and that starts with paying attention. Violent street criminals, like most of us, prefer doing things the lazy way. In their world, that means picking easy targets. They like sucker-punching (or stabbing) distracted people, using the element of surprise to end a confrontation before it begins. With practice, though, you can adopt the posture of someone who can’t be surprised.
I think this stun-gun would make a perfect gift for any females in your family. It’s not expensive at all either, about $10, which is a small price to pay for the protection and peace of mind you get when you carry this stun gun. The cheapest I’ve been able to find the Terminator 15,000,000 is on Amazon (link below), but be aware that due to certain laws, it cannot be shipped to some states.
