This is a grappling martial art developed by Moni Aizik based on Judo. It was specifically created for the purpose of self-defence in real-life situations of today, where guns and knives are usually present.
John Perkins: I believe that carrying a strong ball point pen or a pen made especially for self defense which can be found on the internet is a good basic weapon to have if you are unable to carry a handgun for defense. The pen can be carried in your hand ready for use without needing to conceal it like a handgun. If grabbed from behind you can stab the pen into the attacker’s groin or if he grabs you around the neck to drag you down or away just dig the pen with both hands into his arm at the inner elbow joint and pull downward. This gives you leverage to remove the attacking arm and once the grip is loosened you can continue to attack savagely to soft body targets like the eyes, throat, armpits, navel area. If the pen is built for self defense like the Smith and Wesson pen you can penetrate the skull if you have a strong arm and grip. Don’t forget the kidneys and liver as they are good secondary targets. If a bear hug is applied from behind just stab the hands of the attacker. If it comes from the front and your arms are pinned to your sides start working the point of the combat pen into the side of the attacker’s body after head butting him in the nose if the nose smash doesn’t work. If you can reach as far as the ribcage just dig deeply between the ribs. There are many ways a pen/spike can be used as a weapon of last resort. It can also allow you to access your handgun if attacked suddenly as long as the pen/spike is in your hand.
Thank you for your feedback. I did not base my choice on the authenticity of the arts I recommended, as I am well aware that Moni’s version of Krav Maga is no where near the original form, but on the effectiveness of the techniques. In my opinion it is still more effective than all the forms you mentioned except for MCMAP, which I did not mention as availability to train in it outside the US is almost non existent. All the best

I would recommend Mastering Krav Maga (Volume I) 6 DVD Set — Self-Defense (Beginner to Advanced), as David Kahn is well known in Krav Maga and you can therefore be certain the instruction you receive is correct. Please do make a point of also attending classes or a course as you have to develop your reflexes to apply Krav Maga, and that can mostly only be done in a class atmosphere. All the best
Boxing: Useful for self-defense with relatively little training. But you do need speed and power. I would say, you might want to add some boxing skills and training to your arsenal of martial arts training.
Traditional martial arts give a good foundation for the basic strengths speed skills so that you can apply real techniques in a real situation, you’ll need to be able to do a proper punch, kick, and have the muscle memory so you can react when required and this takes repetition and practice

The ranking of most of the entries on this list does not account for the length of time it takes to master the given art. Krav Maga is #1 largely because it can be learned proficiently in only 3 to 6 months. All Martial Arts are good for the young and fast. But speaking for the senior set a firearm, with the appropriate training, is best. Use of force is justified when a person reasonably believes that it is necessary for the defense of oneself or another against the immediate use of unlawful force. However, a person must use no more force than appears reasonably necessary in the circumstances.
This has the effect of placing a defendant who feels he or she was justified in using force in the unfortunate situation of having to admit to the underlying criminal act. I would add one dimension, which DJ MacIntyre touched upon: are you training for a specific threat, or just in general? This actually is far more important than most people realize. All martial arts training requires trade offs, so one way of approaching any martial art is to ask yourself if the techniques and philosophy comport with your reasons for studying it. For example, if you are the average middle class woman, living in a reasonably safe city or town, how much danger do you ever expect to find yourself in? Couple that with how much dedication do you have to learn a martial art, and that will help you choose a style or school.
Since I have been doing it for quite a long time now (7 years), it functions quite well as a supplementary martial art to my Muay Thai and BJJ (main martial arts) as it teaches excellent balance manipulation skills. It is however in my opinion not sufficient as a self defence martial art on its own not taking into account the exceptions.
