The isolation phase is where a practitioner improves the mechanics and qualities of a technique and learns to apply it against an opponent. It can involve a variety of training methods including solo practice in the air or on pads/bags/shields, limited or prearranged drilling with a partner against a prearranged attack or response, and live training within a limited technical context. Isolation phase training is done forever, both to improve the execution of techniques and to increase qualities such as speed, power, and timing.
“Recently, an altercation led to a man running full bore at me (I’m 6’6” 245, he’s probably 6’1”-6’2” 250), in an attempt to tackle me. I’m not a great wrestler, but I have learned a bit about it from grappling. I ducked in for a double leg takedown, and though I couldn’t quite grasp my hand to secure the takedown, I still managed to get a good enough grasp to set up a nice trip. I landed in side control, and quickly moved into mount (completely on top of someone). And I proceeded to wrap him up/neutralize any offense from him, until I was able to verbally calm him until I could get off. So, in this case, it worked well.” – Unknown (sourced from a Reddit forum)
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has become immensely popular since the beginning of the Ultimate Fighting Championship franchise. Many competitors in the UFC use Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in their matches. Although most women probably are not interested in getting into the UFC ring, the grappling techniques of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be beneficial for women to learn. Sexual assaults and other attacks against women often end up on the ground. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has a strong emphasis on ground fighting, which can help women learn how to defend themselves when pinned underneath male attackers.
It’s really as simple as that. There are particular ways to isolate and integrate various techniques, as we’ll get into more below, but if you want to train to develop the most functional skills you must be using the I Method.
Humans are hard-wired on a subconscious level to pick up on many of the threats in our environment. For women, recognizing potential danger is not the problem. Due to their cultural conditioning to be polite and kind, failing to act on their intuition of danger is. Kelly Muir gives an in-depth presentation on how women
This hybrid mixes Jiu-jitsu’s standing throws and strikes with ground fighting, which emphasizes joint manipulation and overall control of the opponent, effectively ending a fight very quickly. The larger the attacker, the more easily he can be grappled off his feet, using his center of gravity against him, and forcing him to submit (or pass out).
Basing the techniques on moves used on Dieguez’s personal street brawl experiences back in Spain, it focuses on moves that can effectively fend off multiple attackers. On an interview with BodyBuilding.com, Justo explained “KFM is a pure blood born street fighting method that was conceived on the street and born in the fight.”
The multi-layer approach is back-up. To be more specific it is having options that prevent you from ending up in that situation. Including, not going parachute jumping in the first place, but if you do, knowing how to pack your chute so it will open. By having these layers, you have control and influence anywhere along the process. It is also knowing the further down that path you go, the more extreme the danger and the more likely you are to lose control of the situation.
A meditative “martial” art which pulls its roots from China, Tai Chi is a slow, deliberate series of movements. You may have seen groups of elderly people practicing it early in the morning in a park somewhere. And although Tai Chi has numerous health benefits—studies have indicated it may be helpful for medical conditions, arthritis, hypertension and breast cancer, to name a few—it delivers no self-defense skills to the average practitioner. Some would disagree, stating that ancient Chinese masters could hurt you with just a touch, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
“You’ve got to be prepared for anything, anytime, anywhere… I felt I was able to do the right thing and be protected as a law-abiding citizen… You should be able to defend yourself and not have to worry about going to jail.”
The speed of which it leaves the muzzle (fancy a muzzleloader?) is measured 890 feet per second (fps) meanwhile the muzzle energy is measured 405 foot pounds (ft lbs). The theory is rather straightforward, the faster the velocity of the bullet, the higher the muzzle energy therefore resulting in more damage on your target.
My self-defense skills are pretty good, I have decent amounts of strength and size, and I am pretty quick for a big guy. Training like a bodybuilder or powerlifter has many positive implications in the self-defense scenario.
Ask someone like Flex Wheeler, who, although one of the best bodybuilders in the world, still martial arts and considers it his passion. Mike Tyson, one of the best boxers, and heaviest hitters, lifted weights, and look at his power!
Although MMA training is excellent, it may not prepare you for self defense. As highlighted in our section on violence, a serious predator will not attack you like a fighter. He’ll attempt to take you by surprise. Awareness and prevention should be the first part of self defense, but beyond that you need certain skills, techniques, and the ability to use and defend against weapons, many of which are missing from MMA.
When I was studying Tai Chi Chuan in the 1990s, we also studied Chin Na (grappling and controlling) The techniques applied in Qin Na coincided with techniques applied in Tai Chi Chuan. It should be taught in Tai Chi Schools (Qwoons) as well as Shuai Jiao (wrestling). Each component of martial arts (punching, kicking, wrestling, and grappling & controlling) should be studied and practiced separately and later in a form that combines all four into one complete system.
Effects can last longer than 20 minutes and affect everyone regardless of size. The active ingredient in pepper (OC) spray is oleoresin capsicum (OC), the same chemical that is found in spicy chilli peppers.
We took the C.O.B.R.A. Self-Defense Class due to my being mugged 6 months ago. I never thought I would feel so empowered as I do now. I hope that no one ever has to feel the adrenaline rush of a true mugging or the fear that comes after it. This class gave us the basis for protecting ourselves and our loved ones!! Thank you Chris, C.O.B.R.A. instructors and everyone, including some amazing classmates, for a wonderful, LIFE ALTERING EXPERIENCE!!! We will be taking this class again and again!! Go C.O.B.R.A.!!!”
All Martial Arts are good for the young and fast. But speaking for the senior set a firearm, with the appropriate training, is best. If you live in a non-constitution state, or just don’t like firearms, then a walking cane is appropriate. A cane can be carried anywhere, and with minimum training can be a very effective self-defense weapon.
Self-defense as resistance from below is a fundamental violation of the most prevalent social and political norms, as well as our bodily habits. As McCaughey writes: “The feminine demeanor that comes so ‘naturally’ to women, a collection of specific habits that otherwise may not seem problematic, is precisely what makes us terrible fighters. Suddenly we see how these habits that make us vulnerable and that aestheticize that vulnerability are encouraged in us by a sexist culture.” Organized examples of resistance to this structured vulnerability include the Gulabi or Pink Sari Gang in Uttar Pradesh, India; Edith Garrud’s Bodyguard suffragettes, who trained in jujitsu; as well as numerous queer and feminist street patrol groups, including the Pink Panthers. McCaughey calls these self-defensive practices “feminism in the flesh,” because they are simultaneously resisting the violence of patriarchy, while reconfiguring and empowering one’s body and self-understanding. We could similarly think of the self-defensive practices of the Black Panthers, Young Lords, Deacons for Defense and Justice, Brown Berets, and the American Indian Movement as anti-racist, as decolonization in the flesh.
A satisfactory notion of self-defense is not obvious when we view self-defensive acts within the context of structural violence and understand the self as both embodied and social. Writing specifically of armed self-defense, Akinyele Omowale Umoja defines it as “the protection of life, persons, and property from aggressive assault through the application of force necessary to thwart or neutralize attack.” While this is appropriate in many contexts, the primary association of self-defense with protection does not capture how it can also reproduce or undermine existing social norms and relations, depending on the social location of the self being defended. Describing the effects of his defense against a slaveholder, Frederick Douglass, for example, wrote that he “was a changed being after that fight,” for “repelling the unjust and cruel aggressions of a tyrant” had an emancipatory effect “on my spirit.” This act of self-defense, he asserts, “was the end of the brutification to which slavery had subjected me.” Our understanding of self-defense must, therefore, account for the transformative power of self-defense for oppressed groups as well as the stabilizing effect of self-defense for oppressor groups.

They punch, block, bob and weave going forward, and punch, block, bob and weave going backward. They are drilled relentlessly with the maxim, “Always protect yourself”. The hands stay on both sides of the head, the posture crouched so that the whole body is ready for explosive power, and that the front of the torso is protected by the forearms.
The Crew Member Self Defense Training Program provides four-hours of training to prepare active crew members of all domestic scheduled carriers for potential physical altercations both on and off the aircraft.
Verbal Self Defense, also known as Verbal Judo or Verbal Aikido, is defined as using one’s words to prevent, de-escalate, or end an attempted assault. It is a way of using words as weapons or as a shield. This kind of ‘conflict management’ is the use of voice, tone, and body language to calm a potentially violent situation before violence actually ensues. This often involves techniques such as taking a time-out, and deflecting the conversation to individuals in the group who are less passionately involved, or simply entering into protected empathic position to understand the attacker better. Lowering an attacker’s defence and raising their ego is one way to de-escalate a potential violent situation.
The violent confrontations between the drug cartels and the self-defense groups prompted the federal government in May of last year to dispatch the Army and federal police to some of the areas with the highest level of conflict (SourceMex, May 29 2013).
situation is as much about reading your attacker or would be attacker and leading them as it is a specific technique. I actually got out of several ugly street scenarios what’s I was physically outmatched by multiple opponents – not through my years of northern shaolin or kenpo etc. but by what I said and how I said it.
If you are already well versed in MMA, Muay Thai and BJJ, Yoshinkan Aikido is not a bad choice, as your other arts will compensate for its weak points, there are many practical and fundamental aspects that will assist in your self defence. If you have never done KM though, its not a bad idea to do a short course and add that to your arsenal as well. All the best!
Check out hangouts. Do they look safe? Are you comfortable being there? Ask yourself if the people around you seem to share your views on fun activities — if you think they’re being reckless, move on.
Thanks for the comment. Glad that you enjoyed the article. That is why I say there are always exceptions to the traditional art rule as some of them, such as your case with the Hapkido, do strive to modernize the training. All the best.
Ninjutsu is one of the most renowned martial arts in popular culture as just about anyone is familiar with the term ‘Ninja’. Back in feudal Japan, this martial art style focused on unconventional warfare, espionage, and assassination. Ninjas, those who practice Ninjutsu, were even often referred to as hinin (non-humans).
Richard tells the story of a woman who found herself with a male co-worker in her apartment who had suddenly switched to predator mode. He followed her into the bathroom and grabbed her by wrists, pinning her to a glass shower door. He then made it perfectly clear what he intended to do.
