The second danger is a commitment to the notion of a sovereign subject, which is the centerpiece of authoritarian political ideologies and motivates so many reactionary movements. The growing number of white militias, the sovereign citizen movement, as well as major shifts in interpretations of the Second Amendment and natural rights, are contributing to an increasingly influential politics of self-defense with a sovereign subject at its core. For this sovereign subject—whose freedom can only be actualized through domination—the absolute identification with abstract individual rights always reflects an implicit dependency on state violence, much the way Nechayev’s revolutionist implicitly relies on a community he refuses to acknowledge. The sovereign subject’s disavowal of the social conditions of its own possibility produces an authoritarian concept of the self, whose so-called independence always has the effect of undermining the conditions of freedom for others.

The present view of psychiatrists is that most people act in violent situations with a combination of fear and anger and that separating these two types of affect is not legally constructive. In practice, however, self-defense laws still do make this distinction. German criminal law (§ 33) distinguishes “asthenic affect” (fear) from “sthenic affect” (anger). Excessive self-defense out of asthenic affect is not punishable.
The course is physically and psychologically demanding. While not a martial arts program, it includes self-defense tactics and techniques. The training officers use pads and padded suits so students can practice what it is like to strike an aggressor. Students, faculty and staff can attend for free.
Anything relying on strength, power and size – which many arts are ‘ conditioning’ works well, right up to the point your kick bounces off someone twice your size… Think also about tomorrow, not today, if strong 30 something, will your choice of martial art allow you to use it as you grow older and less flexible?

All “self-defense” is is taking these same skill sets and applying them in a slightly different context. To a large degree, they are the same skills with some slight “tweaks.” Properly applied, you will never have to use physical force to protect yourself because you will learn to steer yourself clear from situations where violence is likely.
If he throws either a front or roundhouse kick of any kind, he must stand on the other leg. You sidestep his kick, trap the leg, and deliver your own kick into his standing knee, breaking it backward, then whipping him around by his raised leg. He will go down and will be unlikely to be capable of much retaliation.
The fundamental dependency of the oppressor on the oppressed is concealed in all ideologies of social domination. Although the very existence of the colonist, capitalist, white supremacist, and patriarch relies on the continuous exploitation of others, they propagate the idea of an inverted world in which they are free from all dependencies. This is the camera obscura of ideology that Karl Marx discusses in The German Ideology (1845–46). The supposedly natural lack of autonomy of the subordinated groups is, we are told, the reason for social hierarchy. Workers depend on capitalists to employ and pay them, women need men to support and protect them, people of color require whites to control and decide for them, and so forth.
Verbal Self Defense, also known as Verbal Judo or Verbal Aikido, is defined as using one’s words to prevent, de-escalate, or end an attempted assault. It is a way of using words as weapons or as a shield. This kind of ‘conflict management’ is the use of voice, tone, and body language to calm a potentially violent situation before violence actually ensues. This often involves techniques such as taking a time-out, and deflecting the conversation to individuals in the group who are less passionately involved, or simply entering into protected empathic position to understand the attacker better. Lowering an attacker’s defence and raising their ego is one way to de-escalate a potential violent situation.
The Groundfighting DVD is revolutionary but requires the foundation of at least Parts 1 and 2 to real sense. Ideally you would watch and train with Part 3 and the Groundfighting DVD together. If you already have groundfighting training in another style you would need to have a truly open mind to appreciate and grasp The Groundfighting DVD by itself– but it is possible.
“Meetup aggressively monitors for suspicious behavior…. We also use third party technology services that specialize in identifying suspicious account creation and behavior, including rules that focus specifically on Russian IP addresses and activity,” Meetup’s communications director, Kristin Hodgson, told CNN.
One thing that I do feel that is underestimated in the KFM training and hard to put into words is that there training cultivates ‘fighting spirit’. They call this the predator/ prey mentality and their drills develop this attitude to get you press the ‘switch’ in your mind that stops you thinking that you will become a victim and turns you into a ball of energy that is ready to fight.” – Andrew Holland of selfdefenceexpert.com
Although MMA training is excellent, it may not prepare you for self defense. As highlighted in our section on violence, a serious predator will not attack you like a fighter. He’ll attempt to take you by surprise. Awareness and prevention should be the first part of self defense, but beyond that you need certain skills, techniques, and the ability to use and defend against weapons, many of which are missing from MMA.
I started learning boxing at an early age and the skills I learned are perhaps the ones that have allowed me to do well in other arts. On the surface boxing is simple, no grappling, no kicking, just a few types of punches. Yet it takes years to master boxing but only months to grasp its fundamentals.
Most critics of this art point out that it is nearly impossible for the average black belt to catch a person’s punch and turn fast enough to perform this move, but that’s not true. It’s actually a very easy move to learn and perfect.
Judo is great for learning how to take someone down. But Judo’s main emphasis is just that, learning how to take someone to the ground, but once on the ground, many Judo practitioners are not nearly as skilled as a wrestler or Jujitsu fighter.

While stun guns can be intimidating and painful, the effects are only momentary. You also need to get up close and personal with your aggressor if you intend on using it. To operate a stun-gun you will also need to supply it with batteries, or recharge its internal batteries periodically.
This is the classic self defense keychain or kubaton. Made with an extremely sturdy metal construction, this little keychain can really pack a heavy punch by concentrating your force into a single point. Some quick features:
Some shooters, especially those new to defensive shooting, mistakenly think that they should try to absorb firearm recoil because it will make them faster or better shooters. The truth is that absorbing firearm recoil is reckless and dangerous when shooting a semiautomatic defensive firearm. In this live-fire demonstration on the range, Rob Pincus shows the

You may go through a career of teaching the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® program without encountering those who want to make the techniques different from what they are. Indeed, given the dozens of initial training classes and periodic recertification sessions that I have been a part of, the outliers have been few. Giving some thought now to the aberrations I’ve described may help you be better prepared should you encounter an exception.
This has the effect of placing a defendant who feels he or she was justified in using force in the unfortunate situation of having to admit to the underlying criminal act. This is a tricky defense strategy, and if you are facing such a situation, you should be careful in attempting it. Please speak directly with your criminal defense attorney about this.

The Keysi Method has almost no kicks of any kind. It thrives on extreme close-quarters combat using every weapon the body can quickly wield in such a small space: fists, head, knees, and especially the elbows.
Skills learned in the C.O.B.R.A.™ self-defense program are to be used in real life situations. This is not a sport or a point match. In real life you do not get to pick your bad guy. He/she will almost always pick the time, place and/or method of attack. You will never get this luxury. We train our students with this in mind. This is why C.O.B.R.A.™ was developed to be extremely effective in real life.
