The issues about behaviors that lead up to violence are of major import and should not be given lip-service or merely a passing nod while rushing off to learn how to hit someone. While it is obvious that you cannot get a full explanation of all the aspects of every level from a two-day seminar, such programs should at least  introduce you to the concepts involve. Also they need to be able to give you an indication where to do further research on your own.
The Keysi Method has almost no kicks of any kind. It thrives on extreme close-quarters combat using every weapon the body can quickly wield in such a small space: fists, head, knees, and especially the elbows.
BJJ  is a great art to train in for fitness, fun and sport and yes it does have some great self-defence applications, however it also areas that are weak such as striking, knife defence a vulnerability to group attacks

I would actually recommend BJJ as most of the techniques becomes muscle memory and although it looks like an intensive art on the body, it actually impacts the body a lot less. There are quite a few 80+ year olds still practicing the art and defeating their opponents, due to the way BJJ works. Proper technique will almost always defeat strength. Therefore as you grow older you learn to fight smarter and not harder. For the time being though it is not a bad idea to incorporate some Krav Maga as well, as they go hand in hand. All the best!

What I am saying is that there are different types of violence. What you think of as a ‘fight’ is such a minute number of these incidents that it hardly qualifies as a slice … it’s more like a sliver. Two equally matched opponents slugging it out or rolling around on the ground is the exception, not the rule of violence. Within those different types of violence are many different levels and participants can range from an upset person to a quarrelsome drunk, to a dangerous criminal to an insane person(2). While most incidents of violence are not intent on death and destruction, any number of them are … and that intent affects how they happen.

1.) I am considering Aikido and also cross-training in Krav Maga since I have heard that Aikido takes so long to master. My choices for the above are because I have heard that Aikido is a good self-defense martial art that allows you to defend yourself w/o having to seriously injure the opponent. The downside is that it takes a long time to learn it to the point where it is effective / you can properly apply it. This is where Krav Maga comes in. It seems to cover the areas where Aikido might be lacking in the beginning. I also chose Aikido because I am thinking it is something I can continue doing into my 50’s as well. Are Aikido and Krav Maga a good combination or would you recommend something else?
There are two primary training methods in this phase: random flowing and sparring. In random flowing there is a level of cooperation, where practitioners are helping each other to learn with a level of give-and-take. Specific goals may be worked on. In sparring, practitioners are only indirectly helping each other to learn. The focus of sparring is on beating your opponent in live training.

Also never underestimate how an attorney can turn your words against you. You might have been utterly and totally correct in your assessment that physical force was required to protect yourself. However, if you cannot supply “articulatable facts” that  list  A) his behavior according to established, external standards of “jeopardy” behavior and B) what you did to de-escalate/avoid the altercation, an attorney will twist you around like a pretzel on the stand. He will  turn your “self-defense pleas into have you babbling about “well he looked at me mean!” as to why you put his “poor innocent client” in the hospital. After he has ripped your self-defense stance apart,  he will make you look like the person who intentionally started the violence.

The techniques trained in combat sports, from boxing to Brazilian jiu jitsu, often aren’t optimal for self defense. Of course there are some exceptions. But in boxing for example, punches are thrown with a closed fist. In self defense, without padded gloves, punches lead to broken hands more often than an unconscious opponent. The addition of eye strikes, groin kicks and slaps, hacks, and other techniques considered “dirty tactics” in sports, should be your primary techniques in real self defense.
However, I do think that carrying a stun-gun as a backup is a very good idea. If your attacker is right on top of you, it will be very difficult to be able to hit your attacker right in the face. A stun-gun has the advantage of being able to target any part of the body. Stun guns are also very affordable (~10$) so it won’t cost you much to have to add it to your self-defense options.
