Training methods that either create an adrenal response or mimic one will help a great deal in learning to operate in this state, and to show you what you can and can’t do during one. While sport style training and competition can do this, there are particular drills, from scenario training to those that bring you to total exhaustion, that should be a part of self defense training.

This article explores the effectiveness of self-defense training for college women. Advocates of self-defense training believe these courses will not only provide women with the physical survival techniques necessary to repel attacks effectively, but that this kind of training will also help to prevent future violence by developing traits such as assertiveness and confidence in individuals. There is evidence that women who convey such characteristics are less likely to be victimized. Opponents argue that self-defense training does not properly prepare women for an attack, does not adequately address acquaintance rape threats, and can provide a dangerous false sense of security to students. This article reviews the relevant literature, outlines practical suggestions for initiatives in this area, and describes a model self-defense course at one university. Guidelines for evaluation and implications for university policy and program decisions that address violence against women on college campuses are included.
Judo and Jujutsu: These martial arts are based on throws and different types of holds. Some of the individual techniques are useful. I just think that you need too many years of training in these techniques to defend against a strong attacker who punches and kicks. I’d like an instructor in some other martial art, who might add in a few judo or jujutsu techniques.

I recall one instructor who, after many years of training and teaching, tested for his second degree black belt. The testing instructor came from Japan to give the test. The black belt candidate was not informed as to whether or not he passed. About a year later, he happened to see the testing instructor at a martial arts event. At that time, he was informed that he had passed and now had a second degree black belt. So … not a black belt factory.
Tasha, you are so right that getting these movements into your muscle memory is super important and definitely, training in various scenarios (including ground fighting) is a helpful tool, too. I do think that even basic classes that cover verbal de-escalation and basic fight skills can be valuable even if they don’t go into some of the more advanced techniques you are describing. Remember that most perpetrators are looking for the easy target. Sometimes, just knowing how to use our voices and some basic training can raise our confidence enough to make us a harder target and that is definitely time and money well spent! – GFB Heather
As a physical activity/game- it’s awesome- mentally and physically challenging. A woman BJJ instructor friend of mine might be 120 lbs and has no problem wiping the mat with my 200 lbs. I’ve yet to bet her actually- I’m happy enough when she takes me seriously, and isn’t practicing a technique on me while I’m trying my all.
The truth is that most sport/traditional martial arts do little to prepare you for a real world violent confrontation in a timely manner. You need to be safe now, not years from now! This is why our material is instinctual, easy to learn, and addresses the problems we face today. Reality demands practical, no nonsense solutions that can be used by anyone, anytime, anywhere. Come see for yourself why so many people are moving from traditional arts to our reality-based system. No silly outfits, no outdated traditions, no games, just the skills you need to get you home safe.
Wing Chun or similar. Ideal as uses techniques over strength, designed to be used against larger opponents. I used to spar with a Chinese lady who was tiny. It was a nighmare, like fighting a ghost…and I thought I was fast…

Ninjutsu is one of the most renowned martial arts in popular culture as just about anyone is familiar with the term ‘Ninja’.  Back in feudal Japan, this martial art style focused on unconventional warfare, espionage, and assassination. Ninjas, those who practice Ninjutsu, were even often referred to as hinin (non-humans).
Integrated approach – Mixed Martial arts which is still sports oriented mixes Muay Thai/Brazilian Jujitsu/Judo, Krav Maga mixes all forms for situations/weapon based training which is more military styled
The internet loves a good tale of an asshole encountering a trained fighter and getting a well-deserved ass-beating. Richard Dimitri, on the other hand, prefers to share stories like that of Alex Gong, a world champion kickboxer who was working out one day when some random jerk hit his parked car. Alex ran out and caught up to him at a traffic light. “Alex punches through the window,” says Richard, “the guy pulls out a gun and shoots him twice.” Gong died at the scene. This is a man who could have beaten any of us into lumpy red pudding with his bare hands, and it didn’t matter.
This exercise will be altered just slightly. Choose a lighter weight, and instead of simply extending your arms up as you would normally, actually throw the bar up into the air, and then catch it as it drops back down. This will help you develop your ability to extend your arm out quickly and powerfully.
Well trained kickboxers practice something called “combat qi”,which is the physical conditioning of any part of the body through repeated damage, until it no longer sends sufficient pain signals to the brain to bother the person. Kickboxers will roll a baseball bat handle up and down the shin firmly enough to cause aching, for about an hour a day for 2 years. The tibia is repeatedly damaged and rebuilds itself stronger and thicker. Eventually, the kickboxer can kick the baseball bat in half with his or her shin, and not feel pain.
Anything relying on strength, power and size – which many arts are ‘ conditioning’ works well, right up to the point your kick bounces off someone twice your size… Think also about tomorrow, not today, if strong 30 something, will your choice of martial art allow you to use it as you grow older and less flexible?
By knowing the elements that are commonly used in this extreme — and what their normal proportions are — you will be able to see when they are being blown out of proportion. It takes time to get to an extreme, when you see these elements being distorted — even by yourself — you will know you are on the pathway to violence.
It’s something of a joke, and out of regard for the popular definition of “martial arts,” firearms were left off the list. They are, however, by far the most efficient method of self-defense. Bruce Lee carried a .357 magnum everywhere once he became famous as the guy no one could beat in a fight, because there are always stupid jerks who want to prove that wrong. He had no intention of risking injury.
