Taking a “Mixed Martial Arts” class, where both hard (quick, striking motions) and soft styles (using the enemies momentum to your advantage, etc), stand up and ground styles, and everything in between are studied, is you’re best bet.
Finally, the Slam Bag Video is a short, nasty DVD which explains and demonstrates the effectiveness of Slam Bag training. In short, Slam Bag training builds Dropping Energy, timing, and crushing hand strength and hitting power for ripping, shredding and striking. The Combat Conditioning DVD has more Slam Bag drills than any other DVD but again, it has no explanations or applications.
What the question is asking about is a hugely complex and ever changing topic. A topic that not only defies simple answers, but that is so big that an answer that is right in one context is wrong in another.
Since I have been doing it for quite a long time now (7 years), it functions quite well as a supplementary martial art to my Muay Thai and BJJ (main martial arts) as it teaches excellent balance manipulation skills. It is however in my opinion not sufficient as a self defence martial art on its own not taking into account the exceptions. So to sum up it compliments all my main martial art styles and that is why I practice it. All the best

Simply stated, any program that give you the idea you that you are justified in doing or saying anything you want and that the training will teach you how to fight if someone takes umbrage, isn’t teaching self-defense. It is at best encouraging and reinforcing dysfunctional, selfish behavior and at the worst setting you up to get your brains blown into a fine pink mist if you behave that way towards a truly violent and dangerous person..
(Steiner’s comment: This might be construed in the opposite, as well. Elevators can be risky. Personally, we have heard of more attacks inside elevators than we have heard of attacks in stairways. However, there is to the point made. No such style exists that is the “all-time” best for self defense. Everything depends on the variables. If you are being attacked by someone who brawls, then a stand up fighting style such as boxing or Muay Thai is the best. If a wrestler is attacking you, then you know he will probably try to take you to the ground, where a style such as Judo or Jujitsu will be the most successful for defense.
