The truth is that most sport/traditional martial arts do little to prepare you for a real world violent confrontation in a timely manner. You need to be safe now, not years from now! This is why our material is instinctual, easy to learn, and addresses the problems we face today. Reality demands practical, no nonsense solutions that can be used by anyone, anytime, anywhere. Come see for yourself why so many people are moving from traditional arts to our reality-based system. No silly outfits, no outdated traditions, no games, just the skills you need to get you home safe.
Although the machismo and narcissism here is extreme to the point of being mythical—George Jackson said it was “too cold, very much like the fascist psychology”—it does speak to a twofold danger in practices of resistance. The first danger is that self-defensive practices are part of a division of labor that falls along the traditional fault lines of social hierarchies within groups. Men have, for instance, too often taken up the task of community defense in all contexts of resistance, which has the effect of reproducing traditional gender hierarchies and myths of masculine sovereignty. Considerations of self-defense must therefore be intersectionalist and aware of the transformative power and embodied nature of resistance, as discussed above. The group INCITE!, for example, seeks to defend women, gender nonconforming, and trans people of color from “violence directed against communities (i.e., police brutality, prisons, racism, economic exploitation, etc.)” as well as from “violence within communities (sexual/domestic violence).”
“Traditional Japanese Jujutsu descended from the arts the Samurai used effectively in life or death battles. Other than the possible use of a gun, fights today are basically as they were hundreds of years ago. It’s still a good method of self-defense..I have been practicing Japanese Jujitsu long before it became popular in the public and it has been effective for me in several street confrontations.” – Doris (Sourced from a Yahoo! The crowd in Helena was made up mostly of families and older men sporting hunting caps, beards and camouflage jackets. At one point, children marched up to the lectern and read written statements in support of guns.
If you are a busy person, look for something that is extremely ease to use and doesn’t require much training. An easy to use weapon will also ensure less chance of error when you are in a high pressure situation.
There is no way you can train for all of these contingencies. For example, I know of no martial art style that will teach you an effective technique against someone, who is waiting with a shotgun in the shadows, near where you park your car. And yet, that is a reality of how violence happens. As such the possibility of it happening must be factored into ‘self-defense’ strategies. And no, not even training in firearms is going to save you in such a situation. What can possibly save you is knowledge, awareness and appropriate habits.
In martial arts training you can find depths far beyond the physical. There are many useful skills and attributes one can acquire through their study. Realistically, martial arts are like a large pool, you can go as deep or as shallow as you wish. That means you can safely focus on whatever particular aspect you find most fascinating. Simply stated martial arts can be as deep, rich and fulfilling or as shallow and one-dimensional as you want it to be.
I think BJJ is overrated as a martial art for pure self defense as it assumes the fight goes to the ground, and that the ground is a place you want to fight. In a sterile environment, in a 1:1 fight, yes, BJJ is very powerful.

OK, I’m cheating here. Mixed Martial Arts essentially combines almost everything on this list. Throughout the evolution of the UFC and other “no holds barred” fighting series, MMA has weeded out ineffectual martial arts and kept the most effective. You won’t see many Aikido masters in MMA, because it hasn’t proven itself in a real-world scenario. It also beats out Krav Maga because of the extreme training it takes to be a successful MMA fighter, and because of how it merges  various practices together into a cohesive whole. A successful MMA fighter typically knows boxing (or Muay Thai), wrestling (or Judo) and Jiu Jitsu.
CWRU Police Officers instruct RAD‌‌ (PDF)—Rape Defense—self-defense training several times a year. The program empowers female students, faculty, and staff to combat various types of assaults by providing them with realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. This empowerment is taught through four basic principles: prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training.‌
Being aware of and avoiding potentially dangerous situations is one useful technique of self-defense. Attackers will typically select victims they feel they have an advantage against, such as greater physical size, numerical superiority or sobriety versus intoxication. Additionally, any ambush situation inherently puts the defender at a large initiative disadvantage. These factors make fighting to defeat an attacker unlikely to succeed. When avoidance is impossible, one often has a better chance at fighting to escape, such methods have been referred to as ‘break away’ techniques. Understanding the ‘mindset’ of a potential attacker is essential if we are to avoid or escape a potentially life-threatening situation.[6] Over the course of five months, Adewale would speak to “Taylor” numerous times by phone. Adewale said the man asked him to collect the names and contact details of people attending the events. Adewale said he doesn’t believe he handed over anyone’s contact details.
The best, and most complete work-out for someone to use when training for self-defense is one that consists of compound exercises and exercises designed to strengthen one’s core. Having a solid base is a must to one’s survival when being attacked.
Mixed Martial Arts: MMA competition fights have become popular in recent years. The sport developed in reaction to the lack of real world practicality of many martial arts. Attacks and defenses are taken from different martial arts disciplines, and include strikes with the hands, elbows, knees, and feet, as well as grappling techniques. It’s also very aggressive martial art.
The fortunate thing about not committing to one type of training is that now I can go take free classes in all sorts of martial arts studios and report back on how they differ. An artist friend of mine is an expert in Wing Chun, a form of Kung Fu. He approached me about building him a website and I agreed to trade my design services for his expertise. Last Wednesday was day one, so I don’t have alot to share yet, but as I learn more, I’ll keep you posted. So far, all I can really say about Wing Chun is that it’s main focus is on protecting the center-line of the body. It is a very slow and meditative practice and the polar opposite of Krav Maga.
This popular martial arts style was first developed for the Israeli Defense Force and was created with the sole intention of inflicting as much pain as quickly and efficiently as possible which often includes deliberately ending the life of your opponent. According to the New York Times, Krav Maga’s unofficial slogan is “Hurt them real bad and then get away”.
Another flashy martial art with little substance. Vintage Chinese movies would have you believe this is the be-all of fighting styles, but I disagree. I have seen Shaolin Monks walk on their fingers and throw a needle through a piece of glass; and although those feats are awesome, they would not be super helpful in an actual fight. As soon the battle goes to the ground, they’re toast.
Manufactured by the famous Hornady, this product comes with a solid casing to hold the bullet. The case is of nickel-plated brass construction to ensure that it is strong enough to withstand the strong and powerful impact not forgetting, to prevent corrosion on the ammo in the long run, when in contact with moisture or the rain.
