As stated earlier, apparently  most self-defense instruction (at least all the ones we have encountered) assume that these other layers and skill sets are already in place,   In doing so, they ignore addressing the issues that lead up to physical violence. Without hesitation or safety warnings, some of these programs teach extreme physical violence and often lethal force. Another common short coming in “self-defense” programs is the assumption  that having these skill sets is someone else’s responsibility — and that “somebody” is other than the student. It’s up to other people to have all the self-control, empathy and people skills. These classes approach conflict  from a very biased, blaming standpoint (i.e. “it is all the other guy’s fault and whatever you do is justified”). A very important buzzword to watch for in such programs is “empowerment.” A program that is focused on “empowering” someone, many times gives a a “carte blanche” excuse for the behaviors and attitudes that result in conflict and violence.
Finally, the Slam Bag Video is a short, nasty DVD which explains and demonstrates the effectiveness of Slam Bag training. In short, Slam Bag training builds Dropping Energy, timing, and crushing hand strength and hitting power for ripping, shredding and striking. The Combat Conditioning DVD has more Slam Bag drills than any other DVD but again, it has no explanations or applications.
Chin Na: Well known in China, but rarely heard of in the West, chin na is a set of techniques using joint locks and pressure points to manipulate and control an opponent. Some of the techniques have a certain practicality, if you wish to put your attacker in some type of martial arts hold, while you wait for the police to arrive (I suppose). It would be very difficult to find an instructor or a class this side of the Pacific, though. And mistakes made in practice can result in strains, dislocations, and other injuries. I’d like to learn a few of the more practical techniques, but that’s about it.
As a general rule, self-defense only justifies the use of force when it is used in response to an immediate threat. The threat can be verbal, as long as it puts the intended victim in an immediate fear of physical harm. Offensive words without an accompanying threat of immediate physical harm, however, do not justify the use of force in self-defense.
Likewise if you’re a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, you’re kind of screwed if you’re rolling on the ground with someone and three of his friends show up (actually you’re screwed fighting groups in general, any self defense instructor who claims he can teach you how to take on 4-5 people is just high on Steven Seagal movies.)
If your defensive strategy is oriented on deflecting the immediate threat and escaping before another threat can offered, then ANY martial art system and training will be effective for “self-defense.”
