Self-defense classes are offered by a variety of organizations, from fitness centers to rape crisis centers to colleges and universities. Finding programs in your area is simply a matter of searching online or through local resources. Once you’ve done that, though, it’s best to be picky. Observing classes in session and speaking with students and instructors will help you learn the goals of each one so you can find one that’s the best fit for you.
Built on simple principles, instinctive movements, and practical techniques, Krav Maga started as the official self-defense system of the Israel Defense Forces. To this day it remains a favorite among law enforcement agencies, military personnel, and anyone who is interested in making the transformation of a lifetime. That’s right — anyone.
Second, you must practiced techniques on a regular basis. If you don’t, you will not remember what you were taught and you will be ineffective when you try. The techniques must be with a partner and the resistance must be real.
Personally im a huge fan of martial arts as a being a big part of your life and a bit of a philosophy, like for example the tenants of TaeKwonDo I think are great to live by, but even still I wouldnt put TKD forward as suitable for self defence, its just hugely inefficient to learn, it takes years to be good enough at it to be really suitable for self defence as learning basic self defence quickly isnt what it is designed for, it is designed to train you to kill people.
Turning specifically to consider self-defensive practices, while they cannot therefore eliminate vulnerability, they can reduce it for particular groups and undermine it at a structuring principle of oppression. Training in self-defense, writes Martha McCaughey in Real Knockouts (1997), “makes possible the identification of not only some of the mechanisms that create and sustain gender inequality but also a means to subvert them.”
Our Women’s Self-Defense Program is a program of realistic, self defense tactics and techniques. This program is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.
Hi martial artist. I told that it is not good to learn striking arts if you lift weights, because weight lifting is a pushing motion while striking is a snapping motion. Is it really that big of a deal? Are there any striking arts I can learn as a weight lifter? Is it ok to learn krav maga if you lift weights? I was told I should not train muay thai if I am a weight lifter becasue it will cause problems.
There are numerous limitations on each of these, and I will not attempt to address these limitations in this article. Instead, I want to focus on a few defenses that are specialized in assault law in Texas.
We took the C.O.B.R.A. Self-Defense Class due to my being mugged 6 months ago. I never thought I would feel so empowered as I do now. I hope that no one ever has to feel the adrenaline rush of a true mugging or the fear that comes after it. This class gave us the basis for protecting ourselves and our loved ones!! Thank you Chris, C.O.B.R.A. instructors and everyone, including some amazing classmates, for a wonderful, LIFE ALTERING EXPERIENCE!!! We will be taking this class again and again!! Go C.O.B.R.A.!!!”
I am a 22 year old girl anf want to take up some martial art. My purpose for doing it is basically self defence, but I want to make a life long routine out it. What martial art do you suggest, considering that I have no experience? Also, thanks to genetics, I have decent muscle strength, so I woudn’t mind training in grappeling too. Also, I am from Delhi, India, and most of MA classes here are either a hoax or are way out of my budget. So I will be relying heavily on net for the lessons. So could you please refer some good websites or youtube channels that you follow?

Since I have been doing it for quite a long time now (7 years), it functions quite well as a supplementary martial art to my Muay Thai and BJJ (main martial arts) as it teaches excellent balance manipulation skills. It is however in my opinion not sufficient as a self defence martial art on its own not taking into account the exceptions. So to sum up it compliments all my main martial art styles and that is why I practice it. All the best
Part 3 is a gigantic 6 hour, 3 DVD set. It’s unbelievably detailed and comprehensive, taking all the material you’ve learned in Parts 1 and 2 and applying it to a devastating and completely free-form method of self-defense. It’s almost like a 6 hour private lesson learning Contact Flow (the unique Guided Chaos sparring and energy drill where absolutely anything goes). And that’s the reason we recommend this sequence: because in order to learn to be completely free and ADAPTIVE in your self-defense so that you can IMPROVISE what you need, when you need it (instead of hoping that rigid, robotic, patterned training will work) we have had to turn the whole typical training paradigm on its head. And for those who think Guided Chaos looks different or “unusual,” well, they are correct. There IS a “method to our madness” and it is deadly serious.
